Although most folks seem to like the Skeletools, there were a few who found the carabiner and the screwdrivers to be unnecessary. I think Leatherman has engineered the Freestyle for them.

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I guess it must have been a proto-type huh?

I can just see it now there we are (a few friends) perhaps in the shop or  rec-room as I hand over a couple of beer's to celebrate the new Leatherman Freestyle and then in embarrasment  :o  "hang on guys just have to run upstairs for a bottle opener".   :D

The prototype doesn't make sense to me.  Just get a Skeletool.  The stripped down, lightweight, and relatively small Freestyle is different enough that I could see owning one as well as my Skeletool.

I gotta agree with Mr Whippy.  Why on Earth would I have bought the prototype when it was just so similar to the Skeletool?  Unless it was going to be half the price I don't know why I would.  I glad they went with something that is at least noticeably different.

Had another thought... assuming that these are the same blade size as the skeletools, we now know that they're making 154cm plain blades and 420 serrated blades. It's only a matter of time till LM makes those blade options for the skeletools, right? Or at least a simple swap-blades mod would be doable. :tu:

:P Ugh, let's get this one back on topic in a hurry:

Note that the serrated and plain blades are reversed on the standard and CX versions of the Freestyles from the standard and CX versions of the Skeletools.

So what did the Leatherman folks have to say about availability?  May? June? 2011?

Those are old... the info we all had on the Freestyle until now was that it would include the carabiner and a fixed screwdriver, just as in the picture.  In fact, if you look at our pictures from SHOT last year, you'll see that it's exactly the same configuration as the Skeletools, except the screwdriver.

The tools that you see above are still prototypes and there will be some aesthetic changes before they hit the market.

Also, one important thing to note is that the Skeletool and Freestyle models will not have date stamps on them as they have no place to put them.  The rest of the models in the LM lineup will have date stamps.

The Freestyle has a nice spot for a date stamp, but they want to save it for engraving/etching which opens up a promo market for them that they didn't have with the Skeletools.
