Dudes and dudesses,

Right I have done it....Benner did me over  :-X

I have broke and finally purchased a Sharpmaker. :ahhh
 
When it arrives (and if anyone is interested) I will make a comparison between the two in my most  :police: impartial  :police: manner possible.

Has anybody here used the Smith version of the Sharpmaker? I've been wanting to pull the trigger on a Sharpmaker since all you hear about is good things, but it's 2-3x the price of the Smith 3-in-1 sharpener:

I would like to know about that one as well  :think: I have looked at it before and just wondered how it would do :) I have another of Smith's sharpener's and I like it ;)

I also have a Sharpmaker and love mine very easy to get things scary sharp :o

I also looked at the Lansky but I like the idea of free hand sharpening and the Sharpmaker is essentually hand sharpening  :tu: vs the Lansky clamp system :D

I know that the Smith's version of the Lanksy Clamp sharpening system is junk, but that "sharpmaker" type smiths looks ok.  I have a smiths 2 sided diamond hone similar to the open part of the one pictured above, and it works pretty well.

Yes. The sticks are way too short. A guy I work with has one and I tried it and thought it was easier than stone sharpening. Then I got a Sharpmaker and it's a lot easier to use because the sharpening sticks are longer than Smith's. I forget if the Smith's has it but the Sharpmaker has an angled slot for scissors and the sticks can sharpen fishing hooks too. I got my Sharpmaker from a guy I heard about that randomly pops up on Ebay with them for around $35 new. I highly recommend the Sharpmaker over the Smith's, Lansky, and DMT's MagnaSharp.

I remember years ago using a Lansky sharpener quite a bit at a friends house to sharpen my knives.  He ended up replacing it with a simlilar system "Gatco" which we thought was great because you didn't have to fiddle with the iron rods slipping them on and off of the stones.  I've never used the Sharpmaker before so will look forward to hearing how you get along with it and what you think.

I sold my Lansky and got a Sharpmaker . The Lansky done a very good job but I found heavy Multitools slipped in the clamp . The Sharpmaker is much quicker and easier to use and if like me you keep all your blades sharp and use frequent touch ups on them then you won't need to spend a long time on them .

I don't know if this was directed towards me or Flash but I the Lansky I used was the Lansky Deluxe model. The Sharpmaker is quicker to set up or change the stones, too.

I didn't know Lansky made a rod version like that Crock Stick sharpener. Do you know what the angles are for the two different positions?

Well, I have both and after initial use I can say that in my opinion these are the main differences:

Sharpmaker

Good - Lightspeed set up time
Good - Safety rods
Good - Simple, no fuss system
Good - Can be converted to conventional stone if required
Good - Smaller to carry
Good - Lighter than the Lansky (Just under a 1lb)
Bad - Too much variance and natural error in sharpening angle
Bad - Carry case not the most secure - bits fall out when I open it
Bad - Only 2 angles to chose from

Lansky

Good - Perfect angles everytime
Good - A number of angles to chose from (5)
Good - 5 different grades to choose from
Good - Comes with honing oil
Good - Case holds all items solidly - no losing anything out in the field
Good - Has spare parts secure in case
Bad - Takes a while to set up.
Bad - Larger and heavier than Sharpmaker (1 1/4lb)

These are initial impressions and they may change after using both for a time, however my tool of choice:


LANSKY DELUXE

For me it just has more precision and seems more user friendly.  The choice in stones, the angles and more secure carry system has won it.

However, I am happy I have the sharpmaker for those "quick" fix times.

Let the debate begin.

I think I'm going to have to agree with you on those points Flash, very well said.  I think what it boils down to is convience over quality.  I'm not saying the sharpmaker doesnt put a quality edge on the blades (I'm sure plenty of you will fight to the death to prove otherwise!) but two stones and no set angle cannot possibly work as well as a whole range of stones and constant angle every time.  I also agree its nice to have the choice of angles, because different applications need , very different edges.  I will be purchasing my lansky deluxe very soon and look forward to it.

*Note* I still think stropping should be used on a blade regarldess of the sharpening method.  After reading about it, I think my next project will be to make a nice little strop for myself  :D

Never liked the Lansky , except for reprofiling a truly abused knife , too slow , too messy , to fiddly . I still have one , but hasn'y seen use in years . They are also a major pain on longer pieces , just not ready for prime time . For me it's either the Sharpmaker/an strop . or the Japanese water stones , belt grinder/buffer , or once in a while the DMT benchstones .

Very interesting thread especially since I've recently bought a Lansky. At some point in the future I might get a sharpmaker or lansky crockstick for when a tool just needs a quick touch up.
