My guess is that it seemed a reasonable life span at the time, or maybe even they did some calculations on how long they thought the steel would be good - who knows?

Okay, okay. Assume you bought the original PST. Forty years have passed and you bring it in, asking for a replacement. Do you really think Leatherman will turn you down? If anything, they'll give you a new Chore Pu94 (or whatever) free of charge.

Why the 25 year limit, then? It's so you can't sue the company in a mock trial, like asking for your exact PST to be replaced.
