Swapping the corkscrew/phillips on a SAK - A how to.
on: February 02, 2009, 08:46:24 PM
As requested by max6166 here's a quick run down of how to replace a corkscrew with a phillips driver on a SAK.  In this case a Waiter.  I've shown these pics before in some ancient thread but I can't find it  so here they are again :)

Step 1 - remove the scales of your victim

Step 2 - file off the head of the corkscrew pin, you can also drill it out if you're careful

Step 3 - using a small nail or punch smaller than the pin, knock the pin out. At this stage the backspring will shift out of place. Panic not, slot your previously extracted screwdriver into place as best you can and then use a vice to compress the arrangement until the pin holes all line up.

Step 4 - take a small piece of 2.25mm diameter brass rod that you've tapered a little at one end and gently tap into through the hole. Once its in you can release the knife from the vice

Step 5 - now snip, cut or saw off the brass rod until you have around 1.5mm proud of either side (hint, dremell cut off wheel is good) and begin peening.  Do not over peen, keep checking the action to make sure you don't do it too tight.

Step 6 - rescale and admire your handiwork. Or if you overdid the peening go back to step 2 :)

Step 7 - Share with us how it turned out  :tu:

Why does that liner have the recessed section around the pin on the left?  Can't say I've seen one of those before.

You'll see that on newer knives.  I don't know when exactly but Vic started making their blade tangs slimmer a few years back.  Rather than put a spacer next to the blade they put that indent into the scale.  I'm not sure I've explained that very well.

It is one of those tool combinations that I'm surprised is no longer available.

Exactly.  I hadn't heard of the Apprentice until I looked at the list on the SAKwiki.  Your tutorial happily coincided with a small Tinker coming up on eBay and so it all seems a bit serendipitous not to do one.  Plus I can put together a Tourist, another 84mm I don't have.  :D
