I hate WD-40... :P

I use Mineral Spirits a.k.a Stoddard solvent for a lot of cleaning jobs. It doesn't seem to harm most plastics either...but I don't soak plastics in it.

I also use it a lot for cleaning adhesive residue from stickers and labels.

WD40 has been seeing less lubricating jobs around my house after getting LPS#2. For general cleaning I use soap and warm water. For the down and dirty cleaning Brasso and soap/water. For lubricating my knives that touch food I'll use mineral oil,  otherwise I like Eazox or Militec-1. Eazox is better at abating rust though.
