I've saved these pictures of busted tools over the years. Some of them belong to members here. My apologies as I cannot remember who all I've copied them from. Please jump in and claim photo credits if so.

Fascinating to look at don't you think? Its almost like how people can be drawn to the sight of a horrible disaster; you don't want to watch, but you can't look away! :ahhh

I do wonder what the story is behind some of these.  I mean how do you break both the legs off your Leatherman?  I'm sure every company has a few slip by QC, but I'm thinking most of these must have happened when the tool was being asked to do more than it was designed for. :(

The popped off lock release on LM's is fairly common though.. It's happened to me a few times when I've dropped my  EDC SURGE..

I'll add my own "modded" Supertool shall I?  I know what happened to this one at least.  :-[  Don't use the tip of the pliers as a lever.  ::)  As you can see I then re-worked the other side to match and rounded them both out.  I forget that's not what it's supposed to look like.

I was thinking the same thing about that LM.   I can't see how anyone would be able to do that.

I was thinking the same thing. I can understand a snapped flat driver that's been used as a prybar, but how the hel do you snap the head on a Surge or a Swisstool  ??? Just imagine the forces involved in that. I have both and can tell anyone that hasn't seen these tools in the flesh that we are talking about a lot of steel here.

I do like the attempt at the homebrew BO finish on that PST though!
I used to come here a lot.

People just don't know how to respect their tools anymore.

I know the cynics will see these and say "SEE I told you multi's had no strength", but I am positive if you subjected a normal, quality tool to such force, it too wouldn't be looking to pretty. People will do things to a multi they would never do to a "normal" hand tool. It's a testament to design how much these things can take.

Interesting that the two most common failures seem to be snapped blades and broken jaws.
Fan of the Leatherman mini-bit driver and the Vic backspring philips.

I'm not sure, but it seems that the plier jaws are usually weaker than the handle pivots. That's not what I would have guessed...

Quite right to be concerned about the calm , before the storm & all that. I find if I spread tools around the whole house it is less of a "lightening rod" . Neil you may want to invest in a Kevlar singlet , as a broken SAK blade can still be lethal  ;) :D
