Got a used USA micra for $2.50 today
« on: March 08, 2009, 01:46:40 AM »
I went to a yard sale and there was some knives I dug through them and found a micra for $2.50. It has a little rust but I can remove it.

Take it apart  >:D

One of the best features of the old and/or stainless Leatherman tools is that you can take them to bits and restore them to like new!

It's fun too, but be wary of how many little bits there are - I bet you spend at least some time on your hands and knees looking for them :D

I figured it would be easy to lose some parts so I'll take it apart in a bag. Thats what I do when I take apart locks. Also where can I get the tools to take it apart?

That's the tricky bit - you can't really, you have to improvise.

I generally use a LM Crunch to clamp one of the screw heads, then use another LM tool to turn the opposite screw. The grooves in LM pliers seem to align pretty well to the "teeth" in the screws. The motto is "go slow", and you will end up with some slight damage to the screws, that's kind of inevitable with this method. But it does work, and a few scratches around the screws is much more bearable than rust and crud in the tools IMO.

You'll find that they are difficult to turn at first, until the loctite breaks, then it gets easier!

While cleaning my Micra I noticed the date codes in each handle are different 07-01 and 1000. Is that normal?

It is a big gap, but certainly not unheard of.

This is a wee bit off-topic, but I have what seems to be an oooold micra, but with a plier head with small wire cutters.  No tweezers, but the same exact knife blade, "phillips", sm. flat/bottle opener, and knurled screws.  I don't have any pics as of yet, but I've been meaning to ask about this for a while.

Sounds like a Squirt  or is it a knock off Micra (not LM)

Does it have sort of needle nose pliers - really long ones with a large cutting area? If it's what I'm thinking of, they crop up everywhere. The one I have was actually sold in Halfords (a large UK motor accessories chain), and is so close to the Micra design, I'm amazed noone got sued!
