I noticed that a bit on mine, just from re-sharpening. It's easier than changing the angle at which we hold it just toward the tip. It would be hard to be consistent that way.

I get new respect from the guys who sharpen them at the factory, and still manage to keep the bevel the same all along the blade edge.

Maybe because I have sweaty hands, the Spirit got so nasty looking after I played with it.  :(

Hello, very happy I received my Spirit, and can join the club!
I'd like to ask for some advice: the jaws of the pliers are slightly misaligned (see picture). Also: the pliers don't automatically open with gravity, they are a bit stiff, not much, but still, I'd like them to open when I loosen my grip.
Is this common among your Spirits? I'm thinking about returning it.
Joost.

If you don't mind me asking, did you get that new or used?  Never seen one with the tips misaligned like that!  Definitely worth returning IMO... espcially if new.

(If it's used, and I'm visualizing things right, maybe it was used too hard to loosen something?  And if so, then I guess the pivot design did its job and strengthened the head as it was being torqued.  But I digress.)

Thanks for your replies, I bought it new, online. Definitely gonna ask for a replacement.

Update... I am now the proud owner of a third replacement Spirit... They replaced it, although they said that the misalignment of the jaws was acceptable for Victorinox. I very much disagreed, and got a new one.
Sooo, I reeeeally want to keep this one, but... :) I might nit-picking (or as we say in the Netherlands: ant-f***ing), but this one has very slight sideways play in the pliers head. Is that common? It's slight, but definitely noticable when you move the handles sideways. You feel a slight "click" if you know what I mean, and when you look closely the tips of the pliers move a tiny fraction.
As I said: this might be an ant-thing, but curious: are all your Spirits without any play?
I so want to keep it and finally post a picture saying: I Am An Official Owner!

No movement here on the plier tip, the handles have slight play in them. Also remember that when Victorinox is said to have "perfect" quality control, it means as close to perfect as this world allows. So maybe an ant thing, but we all have our things. Mines is scissors :bnghd: they are NEEDED...for me at least

Did you get the wrong model? My Spirit X has scissors.

Jo Habe: Mine has no discernible side play in the pliers head.

I have the x model as well and it has scissors. But it bugs me when tools come loaded without scissors. All my full size multis have scissors on them. I was saying that is my version of the ant-thing.

I've never had a tight vic plier head. All have had minimal, but enough play to ensure the pliers were always free moving, fwiw  :tu:

Somethow, they still cut well. (thinking of the comparison where the one member was cutting bicycle brake cables, and the Spirit performed so well. I would have expected the Wave to perform better, (as mine, at least, has quite a tight pliers head) but it didn't.

My blunter nosed Spirit is my medium size carry of choice though I normally carry lighter.  I'm intrigued Victorinox chose to include a soft wire cutter notch thereby not leaving much plain cutter. Surely it couldn't be because they had no confidence in a close pass of two plain cutters  :pok:

From new the soft wire notch was outperformed on stranded copper by Rebar, Fuse, Juice and Style PS  :ahhh

After blunting the nose the soft wire cutter performs much better because of the slightly greater pass  :tu: but I'd still prefer a larger plain section.

Finally got a Swisstool Spirit. It was the only model available locally so I didn't really have any choice. I'm currently giving it a WD-40 spa to loosen up some tight joints and the plier head.

I have to admit that I'm quite smitten by the Swisstools that I opted to get a Spirit versus a BO Wave or a BO Surge that I was being offered.

Question to all spirit owners: I have a spirit x but I want to know if the original blade on the spirit functions as a true serrated blade? Or is it some type of hybrid. I want to combo my spirit with a compact but the only "duplication" would be the blade. I am thinking the original spirit would better pair with it simply because it has a serrated blade instead of the plain edge. What are your thoughts? I need help

Also this is post number 1,000!!!!!!  :woohoo:

Congrats on NLC!  :tu:

The standard Spirit blade has enough plain edge to sharpen a pencil and the like. Not sure what you mean about "true" serrated? If you mean fully serrated, then no, but if you mean serrated like most kitchen serrated blades, then yes, it works just as fine as any other serrated blade in my experience. Pairs up well with the Compact or a 93mm plain edge, or any PE blade for that matter.  :)

I agree that the original blade is better since it can be paired with a plain edge.  The butterblade is great anyway :tu:

Yes that's what I mean. Like other serrated blades. Wave, rebar, mp600, etc... all have dedicated serrated blades. I wanted to know if the spirit blade was similar. you answered my question well. thanks.

Congrats on NLC status Demel
