Convert Surge to left-handed?
« on: March 09, 2009, 10:38:36 PM »
Hi All,
Anyone ever considered converting their LM to left-handed?  If it's easy, I'm tempted....

It would be easy, except that the angle ground into the base of the blade, where the liner lock contacts the blade needs to be ground "backwards" for it to function on the other side.  Then of course if you could somehow grind the blade the other way and still manage to keep the length, you'd still have the security bits to contend with.

What about the pins that keep the blades from opening when the pliers are deployed?

I definitely don't think it would be easy. :(

Hmph.  I've just bought a bit kit for my Surge, and whilst admiring the array of Torx drivers it struck me that a multitool that uses security screws is a little, well, confused.  If I were stuck in the middle of nowhere and it failed I'd like to be able to fix it.  Wonder what the justification for these are?

To stop numpties taking it apart and causing damage or not being able to put it back together I expect.  With a 25 year warranty to honour, they want their tools to be factory and not messed with I'm guessing.

What he said :D

I would like to know if its possible out of curiosity as I am a righty ::) but with the amount of South Paws we have on here I am sure they would love to know if it's possible if you do try it let us know all about it ;) :D

but if Bob thinks it would be hard then I am willing to bet it would be though :-\ I believe he is left handed as well and if he is I am sure he would have tried it by now  but I don't know for sure ::)

I'm ambidextrous; only because my  teacher in first grade made me write with my right hand, I seriously think that's why my handwriting sucks so bad!  :P

Def nailed the problem perfectly. The surface at the back of the blade is the problem. It is ground on an angle to match the liner lock on the right hand side. If the blade is moved to the left side, the angle would be wrong. :(

If you try to regrind the angle, it will become too short to tightly engage. :(

It's a no-win situation. :( :( :(

I really wish Leatherman would consider producing leftie versions of their tools. I know there's not as many of us out there, but they could charge a little bit extra for them and I'd be willing to pay it, just to have scissors and blades ground the right way for me.

Come on Tim, show us lefties a bit of Leatherman love.

FWIW I've seen many Charges and Waves with lock-up issues due to the back of their blades not being ground as deeply as they should be for the liner to engage. Perhaps if the OP could get one of those, it would be doable?

+1 on the wanting lefty tools.

I'm fairly ambidangerous though so can usually work round the complications of a right handed world.

+2 on the vote for southpaw tools. :tu:

Currently the only one-hander multitool blade for lefties is on the SOG PowerAssist.

Yeah, but that's only because it's got two of the buggers. :P
