Title: Surge T-shank holder...which blades fit best?
Post by: Metropolicity on October 08, 2011, 01:16:17 AM
I just got some Makita jigsaw blades for my Surge (they came in black yay!) and they are super loose because they are half the thickness of the OEM saw and file...

anyone find or know of any saw blades (preferable metal 24 TPI) that fits it without any mods?

I may have to just cut one and stack the space in there to make it snug.

Put two saw blades side by side.   :D

TWICE THE CUTTING POWER! haha.

48 TPI, wow.

I think I may have solved the problem, took some heat shrink tubing and did one layer on it. Seem to solve the problem...sort of.

Now to solve that crazy clip wooble and the Barrage and BOrrage will be my HEDC.

Do you think the tubing will hold up to the constant opening and closing of the Saw? It might wear and become loose after some use. I could be wrong, but figured I would ask.

Probably, I am pretty keen on keeping it in there for good. I have to cut off some of the saw (only about 7mm) and it'll close in there.

Besides, shrink tube is cheap and easy to reapply.

I've also rolled this issue around in my head, of all (quite a few) the blades I've bought I haven't found any thing thicker, I used some electrical tape before but it's not really a good fix.  Haven't tried yet but I was thinking about a little super glue and a small shim on the shank, really the shim doest need to be the T shape.  I bought a pack of blades, I think they're like 6 or 8 inches long and maybe 8 tpi for camping but obviously folding them is an issue so they need to be carried separate. I also picked up some diamond grit blades for finagling granite, I think that's the thickest of the blades I've bought.  This being said without modding perhaps cutting the shank off one blade and carrying it separate, slipping it in whenever another blade is used.  If epoxy would stick to the shank maybe a dab or two on each shank would work.

Sounds like you already thought this out.  :tu:

I wanted to know if there was options without resorting to my own modding solutions :)

If I remember correctly, Bosch pioneered that style of connector for their jig saw blades.

The thickness of the Festool blades is better than Bosch blades.  :tu:  ;)

I bought Festool blades from Woodcraft store http://www.woodcraft.com/default.aspx?keyword=woodcrafts&refcode=06INGOOG&gclid=CKKT6qrR3KsCFRdTgwodTDDTOw (http://www.woodcraft.com/default.aspx?keyword=woodcrafts&refcode=06INGOOG&gclid=CKKT6qrR3KsCFRdTgwodTDDTOw)

Spray the blade holder with Pam cooking spray apply a generous amount of J-B Weld to one side of a blade put it in the blade holder. Remove it the next day clean it up a little and the blade will fit perfect.

Boo-yah. Sliced bread is jealous of that idea, suppose a dab of grease or motor oil might work too? I'm going to give it a whirl.

Yes grease or oil will work but cooking spray or paste wax will give you a tighter fit. I have been bedding rifle actions to stocks for years doing this.

This topic is hella old and maybe even dead...But has anyone tried just cutting off the shank of a dull blade and throwing that 'shim' with a fresh blade to snug things up? Will it fit or too thick?

No thread is ever dead on MTO, just hibernating. ;)

And yes, too thick.

The blade exchanger of NEW Surge, a spring is added to solve this problem.
All blades tick or thin would fit in tightly, no side to side movement.

Only it doesn't, there is a lot of movement. I still use a heat shrink sleeve.

So I'm using a old new surge because mine still wiggle.

Yes for reals. And I'm not joking around like with Harley and the Micra.

I have a new surge. and that blade exchanger is HOTNESS! but there's not a shimmering gleam of a flame in hell that my money manager (missus) would think it a good idea for me to hack open another one just for parts!  I am looking to try making my own for my mini surge. i don't know if i will try a similar style to the current one or modify it.

The factory blade fit perfectly.  Off the shelf blades do not.
