Title: LEATHERMAN WARRANTY IS ACTUALLY A LIFETIME WARRANTY!
Post by: rockyman500 on February 05, 2009, 12:24:29 AM
I asked them about the warranty and making a SURGE TTi aka premium...

******:

Our warranty is just as good as other warranties. Although we say our tools come with a 25-year guarantee it is basically a lifetime guarantee as the first tool (PST) was produced in 1983 making it almost 26 years old and we still warranty them when they come in.

There are no plans to change the Surge or to make it premium.

nice to know that about the warranty!

and I asked about a premium SURGE...

Thats what i don't like...if you suggest or ask about a new something, they just tell you they have "no such plans"!!

Yes, the wording is a little blunt. They could at least humour us and pretend that they care about our suggestions...  :D

I think they care about our suggestions, more than most corporations which only care about the bottom line.

When it comes to a Surge "premium" I suspect that there just isn't much of a market for such a thing.

More ppl carry a smaller sized MT like the 4 inch size of the Wave than the 4 and a half size of the Surge

At least that's what I would guess :)

I EDC the SURGE with a few extra t-shank blades and the entire Leatherman bit kit all in the nylon sheath it came it...its actually not bad...i just wish they would make a limited number and try it out, then make more if it sells...

Surge is a big huge and expensive MT and making a premium model while having a Charge TTi out is not in their interest. On another hand making a limited run of premium model Surge will jack up the price as seen on other limited release MTs. $500 for a shelf queen, I'll pass.

I'd would bet that if we were look at the statistics of multitool owners we would find trends along these lines:

1)  Most multitool owners will purchase a single multi-tool and they will look for one tool that fits all their needs, and will be of medium to small size.

2)  Most Surge owners also own other multi-tools.  The Surge they would use for heavy jobs, or for outdoor excursions, and they would carry another smaller multi-tool for daily use.

So I would surmise that the Surge itself is a niche product that doesn't have the mass market appeal of a smaller more easily carried tool.  So the market for a premium Surge would be an even smaller market within that niche market.  I still think it's within the realm of possibility that we will see a Surge TTi, because I believe the R&D costs associated with producing a product would be minimal.  However I believe the premium for such a product would be an even higher percentage over the cost of a Surge than the cost of a Charge over a wave.

Just my opinion.

Then why not put it in writing? as in "Life Time Warranty" like other companies do.

I think it's great they are still honoring after 25 years, I salute them :salute:
but can you guarantee/promise me (in writing, legal like) next month, next year
and the year after that they will keep fixing my tools? ???

I carry a Wave quite a bit with the whole bit kit and some other stuff in the knife leather sheath I am just saying the average joe isn't going to do that  ;) I also EDC a SuperTool for work I just get along better with it than my Core :D
