Also, I just thought to add: if there's anyone who has seen an acronym and wants to know what it means, just let us know, and if I don't know the answer I'm sure someone else can help us out :)

Title: Re: List of Popular Acronyms ect.
Post by: DaveK on April 13, 2009, 03:14:05 AM
'BUMP' is pushing a thread back to the top of the list. As in "bump it up". People do it if their thread hasn't been answered in a while, to stop it disppearing down to page 2, 3 4 etc.

Does that make sense?

I have a new addition suggestion.
edc stands for everyday carry. But whar about:
edc2 or edcc - everyday carry capability.
I have used the term in my post on how to make the edc pouch for edc2. See in the pouches sub-forum. If you carry several toolbits for example your ability to do more is so much better than just the standard tool.

Ok, my boredom got the best of me as I'm still fairly new to this forum and searching for ideas. It brought me to this thread and I now know way too much about EWCM (just the first view on a google search no more), dilligaf and many other cool/ strange acronyms. I also have one I learned on a trip I took a couple of weeks ago thanks to a friend, SFI (simple effing instruction). Could be used I guess when trying to relate to others that cannot follow SFI.

That could be true... Though Leatherman's website says 'pocket'...

Quote
Since 1983, we've been making tools that can endure just about anything and come back to work tomorrow. When Tim Leatherman and his business partner Steve Berliner started the company with the Pocket Survival Tool (PST) they had no idea that someday they would have more than 30 models and a full 90,000 square-foot facility here in Portland, Oregon with more than 400 employees. Here's a look at all the Leatherman tools past and present.

What is alox?!

ALOX refers to aluminium scales used on 93mm Swiss Army Knives (SAKs) like the one in the picture here. They can be anodized in different colors.

This phrase was originally used referring to fuel consumption of cars, but now has a broader meaning more along the lines of:  "That is my experience in my context, your experience/situation may well be different".

I wish that when you ran your cursor over an acronym that someone has typed it's meaning pops up in a little box.
(would save searching on this thread)
Title: Re: List of Popular Acronyms ect.

Excellent Idea!  I've seen a directory on line of such acronyms, but a smart phone ap would be excellent. Could also be done as software pgm on a computer. The thing like it here, is putting the cursor over the members flag, esp if you can't see the flag well, and getting a verbal name in a box. That I can do!

It was mentioned before but, as it does apply to a SAK and a GAK, and others, It (these colors' acronyms) should be included in your acronym list. IMHO!

That is:  OG = Olive Green,  (Circa WWII) Gloss, I believe, as distinguished from other "Greens" used on SAKs.
OD = Olive Drab,   (Circa Korean, perhaps before then, certainly Viet Nam era) A non-reflective Military Green. Our generation often uses OD in place of OG.
And, in fact "Camo", although not technically an acronym, is also applied to SAKs.
OG and OD are often interchanged, in the vernacular. I would use the OD for your SAK list.
Olive Green, and Tan, are the most abundant colors on SpaceShip Earth

Colors also used on SAKs, for the US Flag, Technically called "Old Glory", are:
              OG-Red
              OG-White
              OG-Blue
In fact, anyone duplicating the US Flag, is required by U.S. Law, to use these colors, on flags for Government, Military and other legal applications. The rest of the world could probably care less. I would suspect that the Swiss, would follow this recommendation, on their knives' scales, out of respect, as they are our Allies. I believe these (OG-) colors are used on a few other countries' flags also. A good question for Mr Elsener, or the "factory".     Je ne sais quoi!
                                                                    Thanx, Oclip    :salute:

Og is also used here sometimes to denote the Original version of an Mt eg Og Wave as distinct from the New (version of the) Wave.

NIC = New In Clamshell (packaging)

JPST = Japanese Pocket Survival Tool (made by Leatherman)

Og is also used here sometimes to denote the Original version of an Mt
I just can't agree with the logic there. It should be just "O" unless "OG" stands for "Original Generation".  (http://i.imgur.com/7zDxVBs.gif) (https://imgur.com/7zDxVBs)

I didn't say it was logical or made sense, but (like many words and phrases in the English language) it is what it is by common usage (which always trumps logic, consistency, "correctness" etc) , whether we like it or disagree strongly or whatever.   ;)

Just discovered this useful thread

I reorganised the first post a little (added a couple of sections and some additional entries) and renamed the thread everso slightly
(see earlier posts for original name - I think 'ect' means Electro Convulsive Therapy!!)

True.... I'm already busy fighting against such things as "should/would/could of", "aye" instead of "eh", etc.

Oh and I think I will call it G1.  :tu:

If you want the full Don Quixote/Sisyphus experience you could always add "the correct usage of apostrophe's"  to your campaign   :pok:

You can do it - you know we are just teasing you  :pok:

(you managed to not rise to the bait of my deliberate "apostrophe's" error, so you can resist this temptation as well)

edit:  Bugger - I thought I was making a deliberate error but some research shows I might have accidentally got it right   :-[
Just goes to show it is dangerous to assume you know better, which is why I only correct someone privately)
