Well it's been dangling on my keychain for some time now and as I attach it to a ring on the chest strap of my backpack its exposed too the elements alot, so I noticed a week back it was seizing up and grimy so decided it was bath time :D I chucked my tinker in as well,it was a nice oily warm bath :D well after a hour or so I removed them and used a toothbrush to get inside and the washed them through, both now back to there old selves :tu: think I need a hot oily bath now :D

I just got through giving my Wave and Supertinker a good cleaning the other day too. I didn't dunk them but they weren't that dirty to begin with. I always love carrying a clean, well oiled tool.

Okay, I might get a little offtopic, but I've never done this, so I want to ask.. :facepalm:: what kind of oil do you use for your tools? I've had only keychain ones so far and they don't get really dirty or anything.. but if I ever need to oil them... what the heck to use?? Should I necessarily buy something or can it be done with something you have at home? :think: Sorry for the stupid, obvious to many, question :-\

I soak mine in warm water and bicycle oil lol :D and once dry I use nano oil too lube the joints :tu:

Now there is a question that will get people going! Ask 10 people about oil and you will get 11 answers, ask an Internet forum and... ;)
As far as I'm concerned, a light weight oil is all you need. Think sewing machine oil, chain lube, firearms lubricants, 3-in-1, 5W30 engine oil, etc. Just be sure to apply it very sparingly or it will make a mess and attract dust and dirt. Some people use dry film lubes as they won't attract dirt.

I use 3 in 1 as my main oil for lubricating all tool/knives pivots.
Make sure you wipe it well so as not to cause a mess in your pocket.
Also wipe and clean it off the blade with some soap, if you will be cutting food!
WD40 and some rust removing oil work well for cleaning too, but not so good for lubricating.

I used to use mineral oil, but then I tried the Vic brand oil and it works much better and its cheap enough I have just been using it on all my tools now. I dont know what type of oil it is though.

I just love these dirty vs. clean threads. I will run a SAK through the dishwasher once in a while, or clean it out with WD-40 and a q-tip. What I would really like is an ultrasonic cleaner.

I use 3-in one as well. Works like a charm, and one bottle will last you around ten lifetimes. Sometimes I clean with warm water or wd40 and follow up with oil.

Another Nano oil user here for oiling after cleaning and drying.

I use Victorinox's oil. It comes in a tiny container but a little goes a long way :tu:

..............for guns Peter.......... I really dislike that stuff, maybe bad memories of late nights cleaning weapons after going to the range when I was in the Army. I'm sure it could be used for MT or SAK maintenance but I won't use it for anything. You really can't get rid of the odor it leaves after use. I'll stick with 3 in 1.

hmm, I don't mind the smell. Perhaps because my shooting is recreational, not a job.
When I was in the pistol club, Break Free kept my 1911 as tight as the day it came back from the gunsmith even after many thousands of major power-factor rounds.
I read it has teflon in it or something, you only need to use so little and things just glide
