Good Lord! I've done it!! Alox Rambler
on: December 04, 2009, 02:39:43 AM
It had to be done.  Converting a standard Cellidor Rambler to Alox.  Seemed pretty straightforward...

So, the calculus of this goes something like this:

As I mentioned before, these 58 mm SAKs are quite fiddly.  I found the easiest way to get the thing together was to build the knife from the single spring side first.  Another hint:  Get the liner or scale on the pins before getting the springs and tools aligned, they have to be held in place while sliding the liner or Alox scale into place.

So what are the end results?  Here it is next to a Cellidor Rambler:

As you can see, I swapped the location of the knife and the nail file.  Also note that the shield Alox scale somehow swapped ends...  :ahhh   ???   ::)   :-\

In this shot, you can see how much thinner the Alox tool is:

The line up here from left to right is Econoline Alox Classic, Alox Classic, Alox Rambler, Cellidor Classic and finally Cellidor Rambler.  The second picture shows them on end.  The Alox Rambler is actually thinner than the Cellidor Classic.

A couple of close ups of the brass pinstock, peened over.  Tom's brass pinstock is EXACTLY the right size, not sanding needed.

On the side with the double springs, I decided I wanted more peened head, because the springs really like to get bent out of shape.   :ahhh

How does it work?  Exact same snap as the Cellidor Rambler  :D

And finally, taking its rightful place. :salute:

...  :pok:  I know I'd never get an Alox Minichamp, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see one. :D  Darn you, Ari, for being an enabler. XD :)

any reason for having the bladey things on one side and the screwdriver on the other?
are the nail nicks still acesable on the driver side?

Nope.  Just random. I did want the scissors opposite of the keyring, to keep it out of the way when using the scissors.

Great job Mr W.  Some very neat peening especially given the small size of the pins. :tu:

I was going to ask the same question about moving tools around... makes sense :)

So, now you're my hero... lovely work :D
What can I bribe you with to get you make one for me? I know I could probably do it myself but my hands are not playing nice (it's winter), and my tools and all packed up at the moment due to having nowhere to be!

I have been after an Alox Rambler for ages - it's the perfect keychain knife IMHO :tu:

Hey Thanks guys!  :salute:

In use today, the nail file pivot being away from the keyring means I don't have to take it off the screwgate link to use.  :tu:

Really liking this one.

Nuph:  If you're serious send me a PM.  We may be able to work something out.

In this shot, you can see how much thinner the Alox tool is:

Wow, pretty dramatic difference isn't there? :o

Missed this 1 Mr. W :D Very nice work on the Rambler now we need an Alox Vagabond  58mm alox knives could be so nice and compact wonder why they don't offer them in the larger tool layouts  :-\

Man, I should have known that was the Tom you mentioned earlier in this thread!  Duh!  I have bought many scales from him in the past.  Looks like I may be consulting with him on some pin stock for 58mm's  ;)

Thanks for your response!

P.S.  You really did an excellent job on your Alox Rambler.  Verrrrrrry nice!
