Magnetized bits or bit driver extender (?)
on: March 07, 2011, 07:55:00 PM
Hi,

I'm thinking of purchasing a Wave multitool + bit kit + bit extender.
Primary tool would be the screwdriver. I may need to use this tool in tight or small places where only the bit extender + bits will make it.

So, I'm wondering if anyone have already magnetized the screwdriver bits or the bit driver extender, not the multitool itself.

Do you guys believe a magnetizer would do the trick?
In case someone doesn't know what a "magnetizer" is, please search on Amazon or Youtube, I'm a new member and can't post links.

Hi Zed, nice stuff.

I see that you have custom made extenders/adapters, right?

I would like to know about magnetizing the original bits or the extender by Leatherman.
I'm not really into modding, wish I could be that skillful.

Thanks for posting.

cheers daniel, and sorry welcome to MTO, these are pretty easy to make if you have a grinder, i use a dremmel so its hard going but you get there in the end  :D  im sure someone on here will come along soon and help you out with you magnitizing issue  :tu:

Hi New_World, thanks for the reply.

I read some Amazon reviews about the extender saying it actually come out easy from the multitool while the bits may get stuck into the extender. I hope this issue won't bother me too much.

What do you mean by "it works"?
Are you saying that the bits or extender can be magnetized?

If the extender has a spring clip inside, the magnetizing should not be necessary. If it is deep enough you can insert the proper size magnet yourself. Salvage it from a commercial cheap one or use a commercial one and just grind the male side until the correct size.

Hi Jors, thanks for the the input, however I'm afraid I wasn't clear enough on my doubt.

As stated on my first post, primary tool would be the screwdriver.
I need to use it mostly on tight places and sometimes in bad light condition.

I want to magnetize the bits or the extender in order to not lose the screws.

Just hit the bits with a strong RE magnet and it should magnetize them. That worked on my Charge Pliers.

Thanks asupernothing, I have indeed thought about using rare earth magnets, but believed a "magnetizer" could be more efficient.
I guess I'll be getting the RE magnets then.

Do you know if the metallic properties of the pliers are the same (or similar) to the bits?
I mean, are they "magnetable"?
I'm afraid the coating on the bits may interfere with this.

What type of magnetizer are you talking about, the ones with hole you pass metal object through, or the electronic ones? The former will work but won't make objects that magnetized. The latter will make them quite strong.

The bits are tool steel and will be magnetized, and the coating won't affect it.

Hi jzmtl, I'm talking about the first type, the small one that has a hole to magnetize and another hole to demagnetize.
I don't need to make them too strong, just enough to hold 1cm screws.

Thanks a lot to everyone that posted.
