The Cool Tool is still cool
on: May 12, 2011, 04:33:16 PM
The Cool Tool was one of the first bicycle specific multitools that offered more than just multiple spanners on a singe handle.   These pictures are of my Cool Tool purchased in the mid 1990's.  I pulled it out of my seat bag after years of neglect because I am getting back into bicycling after neglecting my health for years.

Like my bike it has some surface corrosion, but is still functionally sound.  There are newer bicycle multitools available now that offer more variety at a lower weight, but this one will remain in my seat bag.  It covered several thousand miles of road with me.  It wasn't necessary to pull it out often, but it served me well when it was needed. I'm confident it is still up to the task.
 I
It has an adjustable wrench with thinned jaws to fit into tight spaces, 4,5 and 6 mm hex wrenches, 3/8 socket, phillips driver, chain breaker and a spoke wrench. The jaws of the wrench could be used as tire levers if necessary, but they would mar the rims.

Nice tool, I'd still carry one if the way mountain bikes are put together hadn't changed so much since these where common.

I wonder do you have an original pouch to go with it?

I understand what you mean.  The newer bikes use a greater variety of fasteners.

Mine didn't come with a pouch, so it is a small Eclipse pouch that I picked up later.

Cool! Looks like you've got one of the originals, before they were taken over by Gerber :)
