Slit in Philips head
on: November 16, 2011, 02:18:01 PM
I just bought a Hiker today to put on my keyring  :D
i didn't notice anything at the shop but now I noticed that the philips head has a slit in the middle  8)
My guess is that it is used to ''peel'' the lid of some tin cans

Is there another use for this slit?

Well that's been sitting in the shop for a while.  Spam cans are no longer safe in your presence.  >:D

Yes, Zag, they're usable in place for those tin openers found on some meat or soup cans, which have mostly fallen by the wayside, here. :tu:  I also imagine it'd work well for ammo spamcans, too, :D

I know I could look it up but I figure the question belongs in this thread. What is time span that Vic made their back tool Phillips this way?

Thanks for the pic as I didn't know about this slit bit but now, well it all makes sense and thanks Zag for pointing it out :tu:

It also adds the ability to use the Phillips on smaller screw heads.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

The Vic slotted phillips from around 1969 to 1992.  Makes yours made between 1985 (pen) and 1992.

It looks like the keyring attachment is on the spring, not the liner, so that's tentatively 91-92. :tu:

And since topic drift is our official sport, are there any (official, non-gimmick, non-souvenir, etc) SAKs nobody here would recommend? I'm trying to think of one, but it's hard.

SAK Vintage/Escort?  Just a blade and a nail file/cleaner.  For barely any more weight and thickness (and often less price ::)), you can get a Classic/Classic SD.  I don't quite see why someone would carry a Price over an Ambassador, either, but different strokes.

Well... You see... I prefer an Escort over a Classic. :D

(The blade folds out the wrong way on a Classic, on an Escort, it becomes a surprisingly able blade just by adding a lanyard to the keyring, so the pinky gets something to hang to.)

Hehe, well I'm glad someone likes it. :P :D

I still wish Vic would make an Alox Rambler standard release and not +B only. :/
