Victorinox Compass/Ruler/Mag/Thermometer
on: March 22, 2009, 10:26:31 PM
Anyone have any experience with one of these?  I thought it would be a nice addition to throw in one of my EDC cases or something, and I was wondering if they work well.  If its more gimmick then function Im going to stay away, but if all the functions work well I might want to pick one up.  Thanks guys!

I can't vouch for the thermometer bit but I have the simpler version without it and it's great quality. The compass is very solid and the spirit level part on the top is cool too. Like most of their stuff, it's built well so you'd probably be happy with it IMHO.

Victorinox have their compasses made by Recta so they're good.  The magnifier is also good.

The thermometer whilst doing its job has one very irritating feature, it's noisy.   Really, it rattles like anything, drives me bonkers  :ahhh  Well, more so ;)

I'm not the only one.  There's a spork mod out there with the thermometer lopped off!

Neil

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

How does it rattle?  I might look into grabbing one of these then, if everything works well for hte most part.  Is the thermometer accurate?

PS - Anyone have one of these they want to get rid of?

This is the reason they are so noisy...the coiled bi-metallic spring rattles with every little movement.

And he's not joking.  Carrying one of these in a belt pouch is akin to having a bell round your neck :)

Heh... And judging from the looks of that coil, it will unravel more at lower temperatures so it is bound to make more noise as you'll be rattling with cold... :D
