Swisstools in the kitchen
on: March 26, 2009, 10:56:55 PM
I was cooking Chinese food the other day and wanted some ginger for the stir-fry prawns. As luck would have it I had some ginger but it was in the freezer. Being hungry and impatient I wasn't going to wait for it to defrost and I only wanted a portion anyway. Now, some chefs would go for the grater but my preference is for chunky ginger and grating just doesn't cut the mustard. And, besides, the Swisstool doesn't have a grater. I tried to chop off a piece with a heavy kitchen knife but bits flew everywhere and it seemed quite wasteful, and somewhat dangerous.

Being of that mind I thought, 'what tool do I have that would be ideal for say, sawing, that is reasonably clean and is close to hand?'

And so the Swisstool was pressed into kitchen duty. And, as one would expect, it worked very well. So well that I might use it again next time.

Which got me thinking...

What other uses could the Swisstool be put to in the kitchen?

I was thinking that the awl could be used as an olive cocktail stick spiker thing. And could be pressed into action for spiking cubes of cheese or even small sausages.

The pliers would make great nut crackers. Unfortunately, I have no nuts ;) for testing so can't verify this claim.

Original owners can use the serrated blade as a bread knife for small rolls, those half ciabatta things you get from Sainsbury's that are great warmed up or for any other baked prandial delights. RS owners can gloat while they deploy their purpose-built bread knife.

What else can a Swisstool find to do in a loving kitchen?

Well there's a novel use :tu:

The only cooking mine does is using the pliers to lift the pan off the fire ::)

Great ideas :). One note of caution to aspiring multitool cooks, I heard of someone who said he ruined the temper on a Leatherman blade using it to cook marshmallows :(.

There are a couple of SAKs that do kitchen duty,
and any SAKs we have with us are likely to do so when we're camping.

I don't know, some people.  ::)  I mean, that's just as bad as ruining the temper on a Mauser by trying to sterilise the tip on a cooker hob isn't it.  :D

spirit

saw: Used it to cut a block of frozen soup to use just the part I needed at the moment
prying tool: used it to separate, pry the block into two once it had a cut
pliers: crushed a guarana fruit (very hard, the size of a peanut, looks like a chestnut)
serrated: bread etc.

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up
Yumm!

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up
Yumm!

In the morning, laughing happy fish heads
In the evening, floating in the soup

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up
Yumm!

Ask a fish head anything you want to
They won't answer, they cant talk

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up
Yumm!

I took a fish head out to see a movie,
Didn't have to pay to get it in

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up
Yumm!

They can't play baseball, they don't wear sweaters
They're not good dancers, they don't play drums

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up
Yumm!

Rolly Polly fish heads are never seen drinking cappuccino in
Italian restaurants with Oriental women.
Yeeaahh

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up
Yumm!

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up
Yumm!

Yum!

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up
Yumm!

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up
Yummmm!

Leatherman might have a problem with you suggesting this, After all that is what the "pickle fork" on the Flair is for. ;)
