I broke down and got a Surge
on: March 31, 2009, 06:43:13 PM
Man, the Surge is big and heavy, awesome tool.... did I mention big and heavy.....

Somethings surprised me with it, mine had very sharp edges on the outside, and the blades were so tight it felt like you could slip and cut your thumb off, I could barely open them one handed.. But at first, there was no rattle, rattle.

I couldnt stand the sharp edges so while at work I very carefully rounded all the sharp edges with polishing stone, you cant tell by looking at it that i did anything to it, but it is smmmoooooth to the touch now..

And I loosened the blades just the littlest bit so it open and closed like my Wave and now its got a chase of the Rattles or ( Surgeitis )

But I new it was going to rattle some, and now thats its silky smooth I'm very happy with it.

On last thing, " Dont pocket carry the Surge in the vertical position in your front pocket with a smile on your face........The looks you'll get "

welcome to the forum.  Glad you got yourself a new tool.  I hope you enjoy it.  I traded my surge of a little while ago.  I found it to be too heavy for edc.  Good tool though.  In order for me to enjoy carrying I need something relatively light.  Enjoy your new purchase.  ;)

When i bought my Surge it had two Waves in geosynchronous orbit around it.  It's so big i tried to weigh it and the scale said "to be continued".  I went fishing once and dropped it in the lake and knocked all the water out of it. NASA built me a special one of a kind anti-gravity sheath for edc because my Surge was altering lunar tides.

OK bad jokes over.

I bought another one recently and it's really a great tool.  :multi:

Got mine as a trade from here - great tool, and not as huge as I feared.  Wait until you use it for the first "serious" job and you'll see the benefit - mine was fitting a new mortice lock to my parent's garage after the wind broke the old lock.  I not only needed to screw the thing in but also file down a fairly thick metal plate to get it to go in - the Surge did it with ease.  Great tools.

The SURGE remains to be one of my favorite tools.. The only LM tool that comes close to being better is the Charge TTi w/ regular plierhead; without the crimper.. Plus, you can crimp using the back of the saw and serrated blade!  :) How many of us need to crimp day to day anyways?  :D

aren't there crimpers at the base of the SURGE pliers?
It should be right below the stranded wire cutter...

I have the Core, so it has the same plier head. The crimper actually works rather well, albeit even 18 AWG crimps might be at its max. I usually crimper larger gauges, but when I do smaller splice and terminal work its not bad. What's nice is that its a proper displacement crimper, and not just a "smasher". The stranded wire cutter works very well. It cuts 1/16" aircraft cable the cleanest and easiest, but I've gotten it through 1/8" a couple times with multiple passes. Not anything I would want to do often, but in a pinch, it's actually rather well designed and a feature I'm glad it has.

Some day I'm getting a Paladin 540. Someday....

Well

I've been EDCing the Surge for a few days now, It started to break in nicely so I tighten it back up and I'm happy to report near zero Rattle from my Surge. What a beast of a Multitool...I thinking of wearing steel toe boots full time, just in case I drop it.....LOL
The Surge is no joke...it gets any job done with " AUTHORITY " very glad I picked it up.
Right now I'm remodeling the interior of my house, so I'm giving it a good and proper work out..The Surge and demolition seem to go hand and hand...
If you know your going to work your multitool all day long, the Surge very quickly starts to feel like a feather weight on your tool belt.

It might feel like a Tank to carry to the Mall, but on a construction site, it might be the lightest tool you carry around all day....I give it a big thumbs up.. :sak:

The Surge I bought from forum member Corrugated (for an irresistible price) arrived this morning.
I really like this one.

Is there a clip for the Surge?   The one from the Charge clicks in there, but a bit loosely.

The info leaflet that came with the Kick clip I got from Gadget Guy,says that the clip for Charge, is also meant to work with the Wave as well as the Surge.

Affirmative - there's only one size of clip.

Andy - I've found on a couple of Surges, that you have to persevere a bit to get the clip to lock  and unlock at first. It does kind of "wear in" after a while. Until then, it's easy to get the clip sort of half in, so it wiggles a bit if you see what I mean. Personally, I worry that carrying a Surge with a pocket clip will pull my trousers down - definitely made for a sheath the Surge.
I used to come here a lot.

It locks in OK, but it has some side-to-side play that it doesn't have in a Wave or Charge.
Still doesn't look like it's going anywhere.

Andy - I just checked and see what you mean. It looks like that's the way it is. Like you said, solid enough, but moves side to side quite a bit. I tried it on three Surges, two of which are new, same result each time.

I used to come here a lot.

It's just the way it is I think, it's a "feature" :)

It only seems to move in one direction though, sort of in, not out.

I suppose it could be a problem with the Camo / BO finished Surges, as I guess it will scratch eventually.

Mine does it too. My guess is that the SURGE is not meant to be clip carried, I carry mine with the shealth. Pocket carried mine once but the bulge is just too distracting! :D
