Buck's Compass
on: February 15, 2009, 07:30:40 AM

Buck is my grandfather. He is in his mid eighties now, and as of this writing he is not well. We were all supposed to come by the house and help my Grandma pack up to move to her new place, and I was told that a lot of Buck's stuff was pretty much up for grabs. Sad. He is a great man.

Anyway, along with some power tools, I found this old lensatic compass. He engraved his name on a lot of things when he was a younger man. This even had the box with it still. I'll upload a pic of that soon.

I have no clue how old it is.. but it appears nearly new, even the box was in good shape. I am proud to own it, and it will be well cared for.

You can see that it is similar to the US Army lensatic, though it was probably just a relatively inexpensive model at the time that he bought just to use on his hunting/camping trips. I would guess that if he were clear headed today he would wonder why I thought this old thing was special.

Compared to the clear plastic Silva types of today though... this thing just blows them away. All metal.. some of it brass.. green maraglow paint on the NESW..

A real gem.

His odd engraved signature makes it all the better.

Thanks Buck.. Love you,

Your Grandson

It nice that you share a great connection with your gramps mate...I do to :)

My grandfather had a nack of engraving his name to stuff as well :)
I still have a Zippo he gave me from his VN days engraved with his name and a personal message to me :)

Thx for sharing with us glorn. It's funny how some things dear to us are not apreciated by others, while things we might take for granted or not see something special in are cherished.

My great grandfather Hicks spelled his name Hix. I have an old old lighter that one day my friend was admiring and decided to "borrow" it.

Well as he was walking down the street (playing with it) my older brother noticed it and snatched it away from him
when Jim got home he handed it to me even before I knew that it was gone.

Sad thing is after the "newness" of the thief wore off he would have probably thrown it in a junk drawer or even pitched it, never knowing what it meant to me and my family.

I still have the lighter some 30+ years later but got rid of the friend. :twak:

Among my most prized keepsakes is my great-grandfather's brass ID disk he had from the days he was a carpenter in a coal mine.
