new section on main site...
on: April 04, 2009, 09:18:27 PM
Does anyone else think we need a Bear and Son section on the main site?

I find it interesting that Victorinox and Wenger both have there own section but only 2 multitools, while the "Miscellaneous Tools" section has about 4 Bear tools...

No objection to a Bear forum section. :tu: However, slapping that "only 2 multitools" to the Swiss is totally wrong, given that SAKs are way more multifunctional and pocketable than most of the competition, and people keep talking about the fit and finish of "the 2" and SAKs alike... ;)

I'm talking MTs here, not SAKs...

Well, I was talking about on multitool.org, a new review section for them...but a forum would be great...I know lockpicker wanted one a while back...

I have no objection to a Bear forum but I'd like to say that the Swiss have a lot more than two plier based multi's though, off the top of my head you have; Swiss tool, Spirit, mini-grip, grip, Rangers, Auto Tool etc.  I also not sure that you can say that Multi-tools have to be plier based and so in that case Vic and Wenger produce 100's of multi's.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

plier-based as in the tools are built around it, not having those really small folding pliers

Well, if you want to be technical about it, I can think of about eight different tools from Victorinox off the top of my head.  There are three different SwissTool variants, three different Spirit variants, the SportRatchet and AutoTool.  Wenger has several variants of the PocketGrip and SwissGrip, and a whole series of new Rangers with pliers or scissors.  Just because we don't have reviews of them all up doesn't mean their range is limited.

We could consider an addition to the main site for Bear, but few folks know them as Bear tools.  Most folks know them as Crescent, Hard Hat or one of the many other names they were sold under.

The Alinghi has bigger pliers than some "pliers-based" multitools.

The scissors on the NewRanger 172 put most scissors-based multitools to shame.

None of which takes anything away from the argument for having a Bear forum.

The pliers-based multitools that Victorinox sells utilize Bear patents.
The connection between the two is certainly of interest to MT enthusiasts.
I would be in favor of a Bear forum.

I think the suggestion is for a Bear section on the main site, not a Bear forum....

What if we expand the Swiss forum to include Bear and Son I seem to remember it being Swiss owned.

A Bear forum (as discussed before) IMO wouldn't see anywhere near enough traffic to make it worth while.

I don't see what is wrong with them being discussed in the general section TBH?

Funny, I would have thought you of all people would have championed the fact that an American company managed to throw off the shackles of oppressive European ownership and continue once again to manufacture tools in the US.

It really is a pain to always have to search for an article if you want to read about Bears...a forum would make it more organized IMO

I have to agree with Ben about a Bear Forum... not enough discussion about it to warrant one, at least not at this point.  And, the search function on this site works better than most, so it shouldn't be too hard to find any info on them.

I could care less who owns it as long as its made in the USA. I would even buy a product from a Chinese owned company if the product was made here.

I doubt that would be true- there are some serious rescue tool collector/users here, but I don't know of anyone that specializes in Bear.

"for a while"...  that's the prob.  :D

CRKT would be far more popular IMO so IF there was a need to add a new forum (I don't believe there is) surely they would be next in the queue and not Bear.

Seems a bit overkill to me.

The way I see it, Def has one of the best (if not THE best) forum around so he's a guy who knows what he's doing.  :tu:

Maybe there is a reason they are underrated in the first place.
