Ah, the stupid universal truth. New products take forever to get released when they're really good.

How do you think I feel, as a gamer, waiting for Fallout 3 to be released in Fall 2008?

I predict the day that CRKT tools show up in my mailbox, my wife will have to call 9-1-1, as I will be passed out cold from the shock of it.  :(

I'm still waiting for a new Starcraft game... :P

The reason these things usually take so long is that they have to be planned so far in advance.  Once a design is decided on and the go ahead os given for production, marketing and manufacturing stop talking to eachother and go to work.  As anyone in manufacturing will tell you, delays and screwups, especially in complex items happen almost constantly.  The more complex, the greater the holdup in the end.  Of course they are both working with a certain date in mind, and marketing is usually the one that has to wait since their part is never held up with complications.  Besides, even if they were, the tool would be launched anyway and they would all be fired/replaced since it costs more to have a warehouse full of tools gather dust than a marketing plan put on hold.

Hello All,

When I went to EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) on Monday to get my Leatherman Fuse/Green C301 Set, I saw the Zilla in the display case.  Since I have it and the Guppie on order with AG, I decided to wait.

For those without preorders who have an EMS nearby, check it out.

Cheers - Joe ;D

I'm drooling with anticipation over these now.  Originally I was lukewarm about getting either of them but with this kind of teasing I think I have to get one of each now!

16th of this month. And I should have by the 23rd....
Due some huge ARMY order they've got......

If I knew EMS was going to get this first , I would wait and got from them...
Let's hope they get the other tool by the end this month.
This time I will buy from EMS... even if I have to pay a little more...
they are just couple miles from my house....

no more waisting time with Post office stuff... :ahhh

Hmmmm something strange going on at CRKT with the Zilla. Maybe they heard I didn't like rust?

CRKT is now using E.D.P. (electrophoretically deposited paint) on the Zilla which they use on lots of thier knives as well as other companies do.

Hmm some more on EDP....."Noun   1.   electrophoresis - the motion of charged particles in a colloid under the influence of an electric field; particles with a positive charge go to the cathode and negative to the anode".

Does this make it anything like Anodizing? Somehow I don't think so  :(

After waiting so long I was kind of lukewarm on these tools and eventually cancelled my order at A.G. Russell and directed the funds allocated to the Zilla/Guppie to new knives.

That black version really fired me up though, that thing looks hot! I guess I have to re-order now.  ::)

Hi Watchers and Waiters,

Got an email from a customer service person at AGR.  She said they are expecting the Guppie and Zilla next week and will ship back orders as soon as they get the tools.

We'll remain hopeful.

You know what really ticks me off about this? It's that CRKT, way the heck back in early February, listed AG Russell as one of only two places where you could place early orders for these new tools. So I did place my order with them, as did countless others. The expectation was that AG Russell, as one of only two places listed on the CRKT website back then, would receive their stock of tools first, so as to fill their orders.

Now I'm hearing that retail outlets like Eastern Mountain Sports for cripes sake have received tools, and have had them for some time now! What the heck is up with that? Did EMS have customers pre-ordering Guppies and Zillas back in February? Heck no!

I think its bullpucky the way CRKT has prioritized their shipments. I can forgive them for production delays. These things happen. But the tools that are shipped out ought to go to the end customers that had their orders in the earliest. Not the dang retail outlets. And if this was not ever to be the case, then AG Russell and Country Knives should not have been linked to on the CRKT site since February.

Sorry to rant, but I will not be pre-ordering any CRKT products again in the future. I have nothing against their knives and tools, and no doubt I will be buying more of their stuff again when the next i.d.Works innovation comes along. However, next time I will wait until I learn that items are actually in-stock from some source, and then place my order with that source.

Fool me once....

Yeah, that was a real jackass move.  Companies really need to take care of their customers more than anything else.  Customer service is just as important as the product nowadays, and if the supplier can't supply, with no good reason, they should issue refunds ASAP as well as formal apologies to the customers immediately.

Screwing customers out of their products and/or money, or delaying shipping times with no good reason is a good way to put your company tits up in a hurry.

Learn by your mistake Bob. Pre-ordering is not a good idea at the best of times, how many have pre-ordered  the latest announced phone (or anything else for that manner) and found they have to upgrade the software umpteen times (thats were I have been stung a couple of times). Look at the first batch of X-tracts there seemed to be quite a few flaws with them. Best to wait a few months and see for yourself if everything is ok before making your purchase. The 2 retailers could be paying for the links.

Yes and no- as a collector, the earlier "flawed" models are more valuable.  As a user, you are bang on.

Has anyone contacted CRKT and complained about how they filled orders?  I'd be curious what their response would be.

Well, apparently I got someone's attention. After sending an email to CRKT a few days ago, complaining loudly that retail outlets such as Eastern Mountain Sports were receiving new products before linked pre-order companies such as AG Russell, here is the reply I received today from Rod Bremer, president of Columbia River Knife & Tool:

Dear Mr. Milliron;

Sorry to disappoint you on the delivery of the Zilla Tool and Guppie, we’ve been overwhelmed with orders and under whelmed by production frankly.

A.G. Russell is one of our very best customers and one of a limited number of links from our web site for good folks like you to buy from.  Typically A.G. is one of the very first customers to receive any product whether it is a new model or an existing model that is in short supply.

In this instance I must tell you that we made some commitments to some other retailers well in advance of the 2007 SHOT Show, your example of EMS was in December of 2005.  Naturally we thought we would have production and a good flow of it much sooner than we did and I know we’ve disappointed customers like yourself and dealers like A.G. Russell.  Business is a series of judgment calls and we feel good about the ones that turn out right and try to learn from the others, the Guppie and Zilla introduction was a bad call and I take complete responsibility.

No consolation to you frankly, but it is an honest reply to your disappointment.

We hope can earn your business someday in the future, and rest assured that we are doing everything we can to avoid this type of thing in the future.

Best regards,
Rod

Rod Bremer
President

He's right, this reply still doesn't put the new tools in my hands that I ordered six months ago. However, I absolutely respect the hell out of the guy's honesty, and the fact that the president of the company took the time to compose a reply to my complaint. Bottom line, despite a person's best intentions, mistakes happen. When they do, admit it, learn from it, make sure it doesn't happen again. (Too bad politicians don't operate that way.)

I guess I don't mind waiting awhile longer.
