Moving on Up!
on: April 10, 2009, 01:39:43 AM
This is my first post, I have definitely spent too much time on here in past few days since finding this site!  :D So I had been carrying a leatherman micra for a while but I prefer to carry my SAK recruit, but I really miss the scissors everytime I carry the recruit. So I think it's time to upgrade to a new SAK. I have a few models in mind and thought I would get some opinions on here.

Here is what I'm looking for: phillips, large blade, small blade, chisel, scissors, file, bottle opener, can opener

So I the couple models I have looked at are as follows
Ranger
Mountaineer
Master Craftsmen (this would be awesome but they look to be hard to find since they are discontinued)
Craftsmen

Any insight onto these models or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Also, any tips on where to make my purchase, I have looked on the bay and they have some good deals and so does Amazon, but I'm open to other suggestion, maybe even a site sponsor?? I would also be more than happy with a used knife too :-)

Thanks!!

As a matter of fact, Tim (Felinevet) has a pre-owned Ranger for $12 bucks!  :o I have bought a few used SAKs from Tim, and they're in GREAT shape!  :)

Ranger , a good compromise between being loaded for bear , and having a reasonably compact form factor ! All your choices are good . In case you have never handled them , bear in mind that Vic. pliers are for prescision delicate work .

Welcome to the forum mate :tu:

I'd go with the Ranger too :), but have you thought about a SwissChamp?, there really not as big as you'd think, and you never be without the right tool again :)

Plus Tim (felinevet) has them available quite cheaply too :)

You won't believe how useful a Swisschamp is until you carry one.

Welcome to the forum :)

+1 on the Swisschamp. I carried one in EDC rotation for several years. But if you need real pliers the ones on the SwissChamp are quite small. If you don't need the pliers I suggest the Champion Plus. Very inexpensive and everything on the Swisschamp but the pliers. BTW the Champion pairs well with a Skeletool. Then two of the multitool gods are happy.

Well there is a Vic Ranger and Vic Red Alox Companion on their way from www.sosakonline.com/felinevet, Tim was amazing to work with and the prices cannot be beat! I was going to just get the ranger but after looking at some pics of the alox companion I couldn't resist! So I think I'll be tying a new lanyard tomorrow or the next night to keep me busy until I get the SAKs!! Thanks for the suggestions!
