Don't snap shut your alox soldier
on: April 12, 2009, 12:00:22 AM
After noticing that when the blade is pressed down while in closed position, the front portion will contact liner and dulled, I suspected the same thing would happen if the blade is snap shut. I tried it and sure enough, I can see reflection off the edge after the blade is snap shut.

So um, close the blade gently with both hands, don't snap it shut.

You gotta look at the edge with a jeweler's loupe under a 35w halogen lamp.

If I have to do that, who cares?  :pok:  :D

It takes me a huge amount of time to get a half decent edge, so any advice that can help me keep my knives sharp is greatly appreciated :tu:

On a related note: Be very careful when closing your Wenger Standard Issue because it can easily hit the bail and nick.

So it would be a good idea not to snap shut any knives...just to be on the safe side?

Depends on the design, some allow blade to move inward from rest position a bit without hitting anything so those are fine. But it's only the slipjoint and back lock that have any snapping power anyway.

You have a sharpmaker right? It's what I use as well, plus a home made strop. Nothing fancy about it, just practice a bit more and you'll get the hang of it.

I noticed this on my first SAK...after a long while of snapping the blade shut, I was sitting at my desk and coulden't understand why there was a bent edge on the blade since I never cut anything hard or hit metal.  Then I realized I DID hit metal..every time it snapped shut the blade hit metal.

Maybe it varies from SAK to SAK...the model I noticed it on was a Sportsman II.

I personally think if you don't close the SI blade on the bail at least once then you don't own an SI. :D

For what it's worth, I've noticed the same issue on LM Juice knives.

I`ve not noticed any of my SAKs doing this yet. But one of the good things about SAKs is they resharpen very easily. I have whacked the blade of the Wenger SI on the bail.   :ahhh   :D

I just put my finger there to slow the blade down before it hits the liner!

I took apart a 84mm cellidor SAK to see what was going on once, and the blade was definitely hitting something when it closed. I think it was either a spaced or the backspring itself.

Since them, I have closed them all very gently. Seems like a strange design though - Couldn't they have left a little room so that blade wouldn't hit anything on closing?

I had a Vic soldier that used to dull when you snapped the blade shut .After chatting about it on SOSAK it appears that only some Vic Soldiers do this .

Last night after reading this thread I dug out the SI I keep in my pack and was fiddling around with it and whacked the blade on the bail again. Now I`ve got two nicks in the blade.   :ahhh    :D

Go Here. Read.

I use paper wheels and follow up with a strop if I'm looking for a really sharp edge. For day to day usage I don't bother as I ruin it first time I use it hard anyway.
I like the Lansky for making new bevels. I'm just too lazy to put the extra effort it requires to do it freehand on a stone. Once the bevel is correct, the paper wheels are super fast and easy.
I purchased a 6" Ryobi grinder from HD several years ago for $40. Removed the guards, reversed the base, and put on a 8" set of paper wheels. Works very well, but I sometimes wish it turned a little slower, a little slip can mess it up cause it's working so fast.
