Why not a tourist friendly SAK?
on: April 17, 2009, 09:10:15 AM
I think Wenger or Vic should produce a knifeless SAK for international tourist, with each country having different knife laws, its safer to carry a knifeless SAK when touring. My idea is a 2 layer SAK 1st layer a bottle opener large screw driver combo with can opener screw driver combo, 2nd layer philips with
magnifying glass. And of course toothpick, tweezers and pin holder.

Someone will always find a reason to confiscate it   :ahhh :D  One can always be modded for carry in environment where knives and sharp objects are forbidden. A sak with mechanic pliers, metal file, can/bottle opener layer, philips etc... can be considered safe (not necessarily on a flight), but for day to day business.

Whilst not without a blade there is always the My First, My First Plus and DofE.  With their rounded tips they are more likely to be accepted in knife intolerant environments.

There's also the air travel versions of the Swiss Memory, Clipper and Classic.

The only tool I take on airplanes is one of those tiny folding pliers with screwdrivers on the handle ends.
Nothing sharp, and only cost $7 if they take it anyway.

Usually have an Explorer in my checked baggage.  (Useful, and easily replaceable if stolen).

Some multis have a blade exchanger.   How about a SAK with one of those?
Then you can just check the blade.   If you forget and get caught out,  just give them the (cheaply replaceable) blade and keep the tool!

I think in some countries(UK I think) if the blade if removed from the tool it counts as a fixed blade.

Wasn't it the purchase of a ceramic knife that lead to the ebay UK ban on selling knives? I remember they got a flick-knife, and some sort of man-made, metal detector dodging knife.
I used to come here a lot.

I once had a comb knife made out of plastic but it was only good for opening plastic packages.

To the Brits who I think have the strictest knife laws in Europe (Please correct me if I'm wrong), is SAK explorer legal?

A knife is not a knife w/o a blade.

Stick it in your check-on luggage.  Have one picked out that is easily replaceable if pilfered by TSA (another joke!!). ::)

Would a sak explorer be a safe choice no matter what country I go?

IMHO, yes.  However, check local laws before going on a walkabout.....

Duckboy , all slip joint 91 mm SAK's are street legal in the UK , and pretty well anywhere else in the world . Don't buy into the mass parinoia hype .

probably becasue that means buying at home to travel abroad. The safest thing for a tourist to do is not bring a knife into a different country but to wait until there and buy what the average local has. That way they do not stick out and they can still have a decent useful blade if need be.

Thanks for the replies, will be carrying a sak when ever I go abroad. So sad my only other option is the knifeless kick.

I believe he's referring to the blade rather than the SAK with no knife in it.  :pok:  Good point that.
