I ditched the covers the day I got my SOG and never looked back. It seems that calluses on the hands are almost a neccesity with a SOG. They are brutish and utilitarian, with the gears and handles digging in. I can feel it dig, but it doesn't hurt. A custom grip would be cool, but I recommend doing some manual work with no gloves on! I'm looking forward to what you come up with, as customizing a SOG is a lot of fun.
I just got my SOG PowerLock B-60 this week. It's my first Multi Tool. It's a fantastic tool that's already seenplenty of use. I highly recommend one.I removed the handle covers within an hourof taking it out of the box.I don't miss them and don't even know wherethey are now.I've ordered a 3" straight blade to replace thescissors. Then I'll have the perfect tool.

I understand that the specific implementation is such that they are flared out and rolled back in, which I wouldn't replicate
