Stupid idiots of the world
on: April 28, 2009, 06:29:51 PM
You have read about my new Buck Vantage Pro I got in this forum, the new one with s30v and G10. Well when I was moving last week I was unloading some of my unwanted (and not have room for) items to one of my friends at work. I hauled the stuff over to his house and we are fixing to unload the trailer on the back of the truck and he asks to borrow my knife. I assume he wants to cut some rope that had too tight of a knot and he could not get it undone (that is why I had a tool on me) and I gave it to him not thinking twice. Well I turn around and see him using the knife to open up the front door on his house. My jaw hit the floor and I said something I don't wish to repeat in this family forum. I snatched the knife back and asked him why he did that! He said he left his keys inside and he does this with his knife all the time. I checked the blade and there was a sizable chip taken out of the edge and the tip was broken, not real bad and not that I cannot fix it in time but it was the principal. Why much people abuse good knives and use them for purposes they are not meant to be used for? He may be a friend but he sure ticked me off! Anways, that's my rant...can anyone else relate?

I'd have been pretty pissed if that had been me.  I don't give a toss about marks and wear and tear on any knife or tool, but unnecessary damage really bugs me.

I think it's the fact he was willing to do it to someone else's property.  If he had borrowed your car would he have put some dents and scratches in that just he had done the same to his own?  I hope not.  When (or rather if) I lend something out, whether it's for five seconds or five months, I expect to get it back in the same condition as when it went out.  People don't get many second chances with me on this.

I can relate  ::)    Christmas my father in law wants to borrow my knife.  I hand it to him and look on in horror as he uses it to cut through the wire ties holding one of the children's toys in its packaging.  As these ties all have bits of steel running through them you can imagine what it did to the knife edge.  If I'd known I'd have given him some cutters  :(

As Gareth said, its not just knives.  I don't lend books out anymore, I had two occasions whilst at university of lending out pristine paperbacks to get them back looking like they'd be read a hundred times in the bath!  When I confronted one individual about the almost destroyed state of my book he dismissed me saying "books are meant to be read" he actually waved his hand at me and didn't even look me in the eye  >:(  That's the closest I've ever come to punching someone over an inanimate object.

This is a tough one.

While I believe tools are meant to be used and even used hard, I don't like it when people abuse a tool.   Knife blades are never to be used for prying (prising) IMO.

It is often surprising who is ham-fisted when it comes to taking care of things and who is not.  If someone beats up a tool unnecessarily, there are no second chances in my book, but I'd hate to think I wouldn't loan a user tool to someone out of fear of what they might do... :ahhh

Special tools are off limits to all except the chosen few--(NKB may be soon joining that exclusive club.  :D)

Yes.  You also need to watch the person use your tool/knife and as soon as they're done with it, take it back immediately.  Never turn your back on them... even for a split second.   :twak:

I almost never ever lend tool's these days unless I know the individual is tool savvy (my mucker's from the meet for instance). Too many times in the past I've had some moron use the blade of a sak as a screwdriver despite there being a sodding screwdriver in there >:(

I wonder where his knife was at the time?

That can be frustrating when someone messes with your stuff likie that...I always kindly reply "yea I got something to cut with..what do you need it for?" and offer to do whatever it is.

Some people don't seem to realise that when you lend them something they are being done a favour. They seem to think they are doing you a favour giving you your own stuff back.

Gits >:(

Agree with you 100%, before I let someone borrow my multitool would ask that question, then take out what tool they require. But I always tell them to not close the implements I would do it for them. Saved me a lot of grief.

Only carry one. The worse thing that happened to my multitool a Charge is when a friend tried to close the pliers the wrong way, it got stuck really bad, lucky didn't broke anything when I forced it open again.

Too bad people just don't take care of stuff they borrow. Some guy borrowed my wheelbarrow for a couple of days, and it was beat to hell when I got it back. He put enough wear on it in three days that'll otherwise take me 5 years.  >:(

I don't lend out anything anymore if I can help it.

Where was his knife at the time? Inside the house, he forgot to clip it to his pocket that day. And oh yea, he says he has been using the tip as a screwdriver. I can see why I end up sharpening his blade for him so frequently. My Vantage is not as good as it use to be and I cannot seem to get the edge quite as sharp as the factory edge, right now the edge is like 75% of where I want it. It will do me good but it's doesn't cut like "butta" LOL

You have to close it a certain way or the tip of the plier will get caught on the tap inside the tool.

Stupid idiot...umm grade 9 deputy principal.

Brought a lock back knife to school to show off to friends which gets confiscated. Then after a minute or two he comes out again and asks me how to close it after fiddling around with it. I had a little smile when i noticed a bandage on his index finger that wasn't there before :)

then again i have had my fair share of knife pry bars...bad bad

Yep you can't fix stupid. I agree with others. Ask what they want to use the tool for before letting them use it. I carry a Gerber Artifact for those jobs that might bend or damage a knife blade.
