Nite Ize Figure 9 Rope Tensioner doodad thing
on: May 04, 2009, 08:27:59 PM
Just got a few of these today:

I got two 50 pound ones and one 150 pound one, and so far I am really impressed.  I used the smaller ones to attach my kayak to the cart, and I have just been playing with the 150 pound model and there really isn't a learning curve or anything, which I thought there would be.  Not being a knot guy I can barely tie a granny knot, so these have appealed to me for some time.

I'll comment on them when I've had more time to play with them...

Oh yeah, they each came with about 6 feet of rope too!  :D

You know Def, I have used the regular ones without the carabiner for some time now.. I was at Kittery Trading Post over the weekend and I picked up two of the one's with the carabiner- I am certain they are fairly new. Anyways, I think they're awesome. I usually have a misc. length of paracord on me and I make sure I bring the smallest sized one; it works perfectly with paracord!  :)

It does? I've always thought that the retention scheme (those serrations at the end of the "9") wouldn't work well with ropes with an outer shell, such as paracord... at least not to the rope's or carabiner's advertised load capacity... :-\

I think paracord would work, just probably not as well as braided rope.  The packaging says to use braided rope with it, but I will try running a few tests and see what happens!  :D

Mind you, the one's I use are only meant for like 25lbs. They are a lot smaller than the one Def has. hell, it came with paracord!  :D

I really didn't look too close at them in the store- they were light and black so I assumed they were a plastic version.  I couldn't see that being terribly strong, but it turns out they are actually aluminum, which was a pleasant surprise.

Yeah, those are the aluminum ones are newer. I bought a two pack at EMS and I seriously think they are made out of pot metal. I can easily bend them with my hands. I have one I that I bought at a hardware store (same size) and it's a lot harder- I can't bend it with my hands.

Def, do you have any other Nite Ize products?  :)

I have a couple of Nite Ize pouches and a couple of LED Mag conversion kits.  I quite like all of the stuff I've encountered from Nite Ize, and can highly recommend them.  However, I was looking more at the gizmos themselves than the packaging/markings, and it wasn't until I'd gotten back in the Jeep to go home that I realized they were Nite Ize.  Needless to say, seeing the brand name on them made a good thing better IMO!
