Sheath carry a knife?
on: May 02, 2009, 11:37:29 PM
Was just wondering how many here sheath carry their folder, or have tried it but it didn't work out?

I have never been one for sheath carry as I always found when sitting that the sheath would dig into me, but after the arrival of my Buck folder I have given the sheath a go and am surprisingly getting on well with it.  I can see this being a common carry option for me in the future.
I'm back!!

I think I'm too skinny to sheath carry a MT.  :(  Slimmer folders may work out though.

I don't know why you bother starting a thread sometimes  ::)

You two girls just use it for a slap fight  :D

Anyway  :b2t:

I like a nice sheath but I prefer a horizontal carry mostly.

The only folder I carried in a sheath on a EDC basis was a Buck 110...that was a loooooog time ago. I generally choose folders which I can comfortably carry inside my pocket now.

I do have a custom sheath for a Vic OHT coming soon...but it's not intended for EDC.

Did it with a gerber, but that's because it doesn't have a pocket clip. If it does I really don't see the point. I belt carry MT/flashlight/Fixed blade, but only during outdoor trips. Generally I avoid anything on my belt, it just appears too nerdy in my line of work.

I don't like to EDC anything around town in a belt sheath - knife, multi, whatever.

When backpacking I can't carry anything in a belt sheath because it interferes with the waist belt of my backpack.

For years I always carried a Buck 110 while backpacking.  After the Buck 110 was stolen I carried a Cold Steel 4" folding Tanto for several years until that was stolen and replaced with a Gerber Bolt Action.

All of those knives were carried in a black cordura nylon sheath strapped to the shoulder harness of my backpack.

A sheath mounted on your pack's shoulder strap is a great way to carry a knife outdoors.

Try it - you'll like it!

I like pocket clips as well, but another bonus with the sheath is that it frees up another pocket so I can spread my crap stuff out better.

I'm also surprised at how well I am getting on with a 2 handed folder.

I carry Multi's and SAK's in a sheath all the time .A lot better than looking like you are scratching your crotch every time yo try to find a SAK in your pockets .

On the, now rare, occasions that I carry a Multi I always have it in a belt pouch.  In fact anything larger than a four layer SAK goes in one.  I've never found them to be uncomfortable and, as you say, it keeps my pockets free for other crap stuff.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

The only folder I own that I sheath carry is my good ole Gerber Gator! This is an excellent knife, IMO!

Yeah, they do nice work

I may ask for a slightly larger loop on the Spirit sheath to fit a flashlight.

No. It´s your butt that makes your butt look big.  :D

I carry my spirit in a sheath sometimes, tried it with flashlights and knives too, but it did not work for me.

I've tried to sheath carry a knife, but I've never had a dedicated knife sheath made to size, so it's never worked well with me.

Sheathing in general depends on the pants I'm wearing and weather or not they have suitable pocketry.

I use to carry a Swiss Tool and a Rucksack in a double .45 pouch.

I thought that looked better then having two sheaths crowded together on a belt.

Now I carry my Spirit in its sheath and the Spyderco in my pocket (thank God for clips).

I have gotten so use to knives with clips I can't stand having anything bigger then a Rambler in my pocket.

If I have to edc a SAK I will carry it suspended in my pocket with the 4 1858 Multiclip Belt Hanger by Victorinox.
