Best Supplemental SAK?
on: May 12, 2009, 01:41:15 AM
Hey guys, I was wondering, what SAK do you think the best is to pair with a multi-tool?

For me, it has to be the Victorinox Explorer Plus. It has a number of features that aren't duplicated such as a corkscrew, pen, parcel hook, straight pin, and a magnifying glass. Another advantage is that I can save the large blade for food prep and such. A standard SwissTool/Explorer, LM Charge XTi-ALX/Explorer, Spirit S/Explorer, or even other tools with puny scissors can be supplemented by such a SAK!

The Explorer Plus has to be one of their best models, IMO!

I find my Spirit can do most anything, so all I carry with it is a OH Sentinel w/clip, cause it's so much easier to grab that from my pocket one handed than try to get out the knife blade on any multitool; and I use a single blade more than anything else.

I have 1 and I think it is a very nice SAK as well but I don't find that it gets carried much :-\ I just usually don't think about it much :) It is a very capable SAK though :tu:

The Climber on my keys with works great with the Spirit S I usually keep in my bag :)  Makes up for the lack of Scissors and the corkscrew is obviously invaluable  :D

For me it's either a Huntsman or a Farmer . There is also a classic on the keys .

As most of you know my main carry is a SAK anyway, but the supplemental one I have is the 58mm Rambler.  The scissors are fine but it's the tiny Phillips driver you just don't find on many other SAKs that makes it stand out.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I only carry a SAK backup at work.  It's a Wenger Clipper.  I did carry the Timekeeper as a backup, but when I modified the Cybertool 41 with Timekeeper scales, I went back to the Clipper, (Cybertimer being the primary tool).

On the farm, the Guppie is my backup to my MT.

Yes, but it's a special multitool  :D

Really, all SAKs are MTs, but not all MTs are SAKs.  :salute:

I don't like to think of the SAK as a multitool. That just says that the SAK has a bunch of tools, which denigrates the SAK. The SAK is so much more than a bunch of tools. The SAK is an accoutrement to living. The SAK is the mantra by which I troubleshoot the everyday problems of life. The SAK is a friend that sticks with me through my darkest days.

Multitool? The SAK is so much more.  :salute:

Timekeeper for me.  Takes the perfect combo of the Compact and adds a very stylish watch.

The Explorer Plus is my favorite too but for me its too much to carry along a medium- or full-size multitool. In those cases I tend to go with a Minichamp or Manager.

Humm, an Explorer keeps a Swisstool company in the kitchen. A Mountaineer is companion to a Swisstool RS in the car and makes up for missing corkscrew and file. The camp kitchen now has a Spartan, Solo and Soldier (no fiddly tools to clean food off). Backpacking it's just the Vic Ranger...

I just got back from the field yesterday.  What did I carry?

1. OHT in my rucksack

2. Champion on my trousers belt

3. SOG PowerPlier EOD on my rucksack as well

Most folks in the Army it seems carry a "Gerber tool" (universal term that replaced "Leatherman tool") or a "tacticool" folder  One of the pilots I work with showed me his large Gerber automatic knife he got before he shipped out to Iraq a few years back.

I think the Safari Hunter is a good supplement SAK.  It's always good to have 2 blades IMO so a second PE is a bonus.  It has a serrated blade which isn't on all MT's,  an awl that some manufacturers don't always put on, a decent saw and a decent bottle opener (again lacking on some) and of course a corkscrew which is pretty rare on anything plier based.
I'm back!!
