B62 versus B63 - crimper question
on: May 12, 2009, 05:14:08 AM
Hello to everybody,

Well, after reading for a couple of weeks this forum, comparing SOG to others multitools, you all convinced me here to go with a SOG.
So now I have a question regarding the two models mentioned in the subject.
According to the SOG chart, the B62 doesn't have a blast cap crimper, while the B63 has one. So far, so good. The problem begins when I try to compare on picture the two knifes. The pictures look the same to me, or I don't know what a crimper is (could be...  :D) Do we agree we talk about that stuff "inside" the handle, oposite to the pliers itself ?
Pictures on amazon look the same too, and even on youtube I see that damn crimper on a B62.
I went to see "your" chart on the wiki (very nice work, by the way), and... the crimper is noted as a feature for the B62 !
And I couldn't find any post related to these two models clarifying that point.

So... well, does anybody have the two models, or anybody, and could clarify that point ?
And no, I don't really need a crimper, but, you know, it's the kind of things that will bug me 'til I die if I don't find the answer.

Subsidiary question : does anybody have an idea where I could find SOG multitool (one of the two listed model) in Montreal, or even Ottawa ? SOG is not really fast on that one to answer  :-\ If not, Amazon seems to be the cheapest online store. Could you confirm ?

Well. Thank you very much for reading and taking time to answer. This forum is amazing.

welcome to the forum friend, well certanly im not an expert, but i guess the lackiness of crimper is a feature of the old desing head(meaing that there's some that have it and some that dont) but with the new plier head design you got a crimper whether you like it or not

old head design example:

new plier head design:

if im wrong please correct me :salute:

Montreal eh? Which part exactly?

The difference is left over from old style plier head, there are one with and one without. New style head are all the same but SOG kept the different part number. You can find powerlock at Le Baron (http://www.lebaron.ca/index_en.html Warning: browse through their catalogue and visit their store will cost you a lot of money!), not the cheapest, but if you can wait they have tax free sale a couple times per year.

Oh and if you are curious, blast cap crimper is used for crimp fuse into this.

Well, thank you very much for the fast response. The pictures help, cliosguy.

So from what I understand, with that new head design, there is no more difference between the B62 and the B63 ?

@jzmtl : I live in Ahuntsic. Lebaron... of course ! I didn't think to check that place.

Thank you.

Well, so it's only a short walk for you then! I'm in Brossard and have to fight traffic over the whole island to get there.

As far as I can tell no there is no difference. But with SOG it doesn't really matter which model you get, since the components are easily swapped.

Well, yes, I'm not so far from them, but I checked the prices... Gosh !

I'll try to manage to get one via the US. Amazon is offering free shipping inside the US

Thanks to all of you for the response and precision. It's greatly appreciated.

I'll post a picture when I'll get the object. Still have to wait a couple of week, though.  :(

There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

Then I hope the guy sending it marked it in a way that UPS will not collect tax on, although they try to on everything, or they'll charge you $50 worth of brokerage fee and tax.

well, it should be written gift on the box, and Dany ZRC put a note inside to justify that.

But that tax story, I don't get it. Sometimes I have taxes to pay, sometimes no. I think that below 50$ (US$), they don't really care. When I bought my traction aids, I was supposed to pay taxes, I didn't. When my sister sent me (as a real gift), a lense for my apn, I got taxes to pay. (well, the lense was more than 600US$, too...)

I'll keep you in touch.

Post office yes, you don't pay tax most of the time. UPS however will try to drive their brown truck up your behind full speed to screw you. When I moved from u.s. to Canada I sent most of my personal belongings via UPS to myself, and they charged tax and brokerage fee on that! Customs give me my tax back after some paperwork, UPS however refuse to give me the brokerage fee (which is very significant compare to post office, $50ish vs. $8 per package) back.  >:(

Then later I bought some special transmission oil that wasn't available in Canada at the time, it cost me $25, and I had to pay about $25 of tax and brokerage to ransom it back from UPS.

I will never touch UPS again.

well, that's good to know. I'll see what happen with these guys. But when you buy something on  line, you don't really have the choice of the carrier, do you ?

Most online places do give you a choice, if they don't I'll shop elsewhere.

Tool received nicely packed, without any extra fees to pay.  :drink:
I tell you, with customs, it's never the same. And I think that under 50$, they don't even pay attention.

Anyway, thanks for the advices.

A review of my tool will soon be published, with pix  :D
