What do you think of Chinese made branded knives?
on: April 22, 2009, 01:10:59 AM
I was at the knives store yesterday, and going to buy the Benchmade lockback knife, when I noticed that it was made
in China. The truth was that model, similar to spyderco's halfserrated and one hand opening was inexpensive.
Same with the Bucks and SOGs. But these Chinese made knives are very nice and have finishes very similar with the U.S. made ones.
I had second thoughts and just told the saleslady that i'll be back and think it over.

What do you think guys?

what kind of blade steel does it have (if even advertised)? chinese knives usually have soft steels... I wouldn't buy anything thats not made by a quality manufacturer...if not, you'll be disappointed...

If the quality is good I don't see why there should be a problem ???  Perfectly good knives can come from anywhere if the QC is good enough.

Benchmade have different gradings in their lines and I believe that the red grading is their imported line.  Great prices and still great knives from a well known manufacturer.
I'm back!!

I agree with what Benner mentioned above.
I do have some Byrd knives and they have been great.  I edc one to work and it's amazing how the black coating has held up.  The edge holding as well is not too bad.  I had to chuckle because the second box I opened up with my Emerson in the kitchen at work (USA MADE) took the coating right off the blade around the tip.  I didn't mind as it gives the blade character and signifies that it's a user.
I've encountered quality control issues on Chinese and USA made knives.   I ended up taking back two Kershaw's one had blade play the other the clip wouldn't tighten up inside the scales/liner.  Sometimes like one poster mentioned you can get a general idea of quality with blade steel used.
I find Youtube to be a great help if you type in the name of the knife your looking at.  I know "Nutnfancy" has some pretty good and informative reviews on knives.

Rough Riders were mediocre at best when they hit the market, and their quality has greatly improved. You'll be hard pressed to find a major knife company that doesn't have  some of their product line made in China.

I have nothing bad to say about the Byrd Cara Cara I have.  Companies like Spyderco and Benchmade have to much to loose if they put out a product that is sub-standard.  It is a perfect example of the fact that "made in China" doesn't have to mean poor.

It's less about country of manufacturer and more about the equipment being used to manufacture the product, materials being used, training of the workers, quality assurance and oversight by the parent company.

If the warranty is backed by a good company, it's no big deal with me
(also the time you get with the warranty).

I would be fine with Benchmade  ;)

i didn't realize it came out in the full spyder edge.  I just might have to get a tenacious sometime and I think make it a full on serrated.

Same as mine that Teo - fully serrated. I reckon you'll like it more and more with time. A really great knife IMO.
I used to come here a lot.

Byrd knives, Benchmade red class, Spyderco Tenacious and Bug... Great knives! Even the really cheap FENIX brand (the light company) promoknives are great,  small, lightweight and well made. Nothing to say against Chinese made branded knives, some US made knives I own are of worse quality.
