Started to catalog my multitools.
on: May 24, 2009, 04:04:28 AM
At the UK meet last month, Flash asked me if I had named my multitools on my household insurance policy. I've thought about this a few times, and when he mentioned it again, I decided that I should do something about it.

So, I've started listing what I've got, and then comes the tricky part - deciding on a value for them. This is quite a tricky thing to do, as many of them would be very difficult to replace nowadays.

Anyhoo, I seem to have accumulated over 150 tools  :o At a guess, an average value would be about £30, so that's £4,500 that they've cost me. Replacement cost at UK prices, is probably more like double that.

Then there's the knives....

Scary isn't it?

I used to come here a lot.

Yup.

But then again, if you didn't have a ton of 'em, MT.O pro'lly wouldn't hold much appeal would it?  :D

But sure is more fun than collecting postage stamps :D Maybe somebody ought to publish something like Bernard Levine's guide on knives.

It is funny though Dave , my Riveted PST is one of my most valued MT's & it cost me $40us , the two Al Mars average out too $120us each & one of those is a one of 200 first release pre production models. So I think true replacement value is a real mystery , can they be replaced

My wife got a look at my list a few years ago. :(  I've been a lot more careful since then.

My spreadsheet inventory has the following columns:

Date Acquired..... Manufacturer .....Model Name ..... Model # ..... Price Paid

My policy covers replacement value, if there is a loss then at that time they will pay the cost to replace my  NIB MT's, Knives and flashlights.  ( 99% are NIB ).
My inventory list is also backed up with photographs of each item ( 133  total ) listed.
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

It can't be a bad idea Dave, you've put a hell of alot of money and time into your collection clearly.  Not to mention the sentimental side.

Good luck deciding on a final value for some of the rarer pieces  :tu:

Are you using Excel to catalog your collection?

I have mine catalog'd in 2 Moleskine's with other sensitive stuff..one at home hid and another in my dads gun safe.

OK - I've found a way to make this a bit more interesting I think.

I've basically set up a couple of Blogs - one for random musings about tools, the other a photoblog, into which I'll try to photograph and catalog my stuff.

It may appear to some that this was just an excuse to play with websites, rather than just get on with it but it wasn't honestly

I always used to say I wouldn't do a blog, as it's probably a bit arrogant to think that people might actually care what I think, but that hasn't stopped me rambling on here so that's one "reason" overcome/ :D

If anyone does happen to be vaguely interested, you need to look here: http://dave.kitson.org.uk . "Blog" is/will be the wordy stuff, "Collection" will be the pics.

It may take some time, but I'll try to link to these forums and the wiki as I go, as I'm too lazy to type stuff from scratch  :P

Any thoughts, I'd be happy to hear them!

Oh - the "skin" on the Collection blog is just temporary whilst I get stuff set up properly. The lightbox works on both blogs now, instead of taking you to Photobucket.

Next update will likely be tomorrow when (if?)  get back from the meet!
