CrossCut and other small scissors: solution? SOL?
on: July 05, 2009, 10:13:49 AM
I just got around to trying out the scrissors on a sog crosscut (which is in almost new condition) on something besides paper...and I am disappointed to find out that anything but paper cause the scissors to be forced apart ever so slightly...giving the lame fold around the blades instead of cutting

The scissors haven't been sharpened as far as i can tell, doesn't seem like they've been used much at all

I'm open to the fact that maybe I'm wrong and i do just need to sharpen them...but jesus.... it takes almost nothing to force the blades apart enough for them to be totally ineffective.
Due to the nature of scissors is this something outside of warranty?

I'm reluctant to start futzing around with it and make it worse (and be blamed) if there is a chance they'll have a look at them...anyone else have any suggestion on making these less than completely worthless scissors?

...here's what I'm talking about...those are a mere two inner strands of paracord (it won't cut any part of the paracord without me farting with it a while)

What do you guys use your scissors on? what are your different scissors' limits? I don't think i'm expecting too much, my other MT scissors fare just fine with this kind of thing.

This is why i retired my Crosscut and use the Micra exclusively. The Crosscut scissors is useful nearer the hinge, I find. This is apparent when cutting bits of thread, and in your case, paracord.

I doubt you are doing it wrong, because if you are, then I would have been too :-\

Get a Micra I say.

Actually down by the hinge is the worst part! I'll bet sog will just say that I bent them, not the case. :(

If I just start to close the scissors there is a noticeable gap at the bottom...they are only in contact at the very top 1/4 of the length...of course this is useless, because things have the most leverage there to force them apart.

i've got my eye on a lot of three mini MTs...two of which have scissors one being a micra...so i won't be without a pair for long hopefully....

as long as i'm not fighting one of you hardcore ebayers for the win.

No bids from this side of the pond sadly, but good luck with the auction  :tu:

I have a micra and have been pretty happy with the scissors on it. Alternately, a SAK Rambler is a great alternative.

But why the Micra when the Squirt is so much better with outside opening tools and all?

You may just need to sharpen them.

I wish that were the case. they are sharp. :(

I do believe the problem is that the blades of the scissors aren't flush...if i close them and hold them up to the light, i can see only about the very 1/4" tip is even making contact.

If you pinch the two half together with your finger will they cut? If you look at the scissors on SAK or Micra the two blades aren't flush. When closed only tip of two halves is making contact with each other, while open the two tips will go past each other. The two halves are actually slightly curves towards each other so when you cut they push against each other to ensure the cutting point is touching.

Yes they seem to cut ok if i force them together...I guess I will try to sharpen them again...I always thought I knew what sharp was but maybe not...geez :P

They feel as sharp as any of my other SAK/MT scissors, i didn't really notice until now but you are right, the blades do curve like that on other scissors as well...

Upon closer inspection as the blades close they don't even actually touch until they are about 2/3rd shut;

Another drawback of the compound leverage setup on these is that it doesn't allow any extra lateral pressure to be exerted on the blades keeping them forced together better. At first I thought this might actually be a benefit as I am left handed, most scissors are handled in a way that a lefty actually forces the blades apart when using them.

maybe something else is out of whack in terms of them lining up...

Sog did get back to me and told me to send them in and that they would take a look..I'm not sure if it's worth it...

Thanks for your advice everyone, i'll let you know how I fare.

Don't get me wrong...I'm a big SOG fan...just not of their scissors. Thanks again.

That definately doesn't sound right, you may need to rebend the blade a bit. My micra came with tips that won't cut and I had to adjust them with pliers.

Could it be you just got a bad one?,  I've been carrying mine everyday for 3 years and it cuts fine.  Everything from paper to clamshell packaging with no problems.
Is the Crosscut discontinued now or still available?.  Can you send it into SOG for a replacement?.
