*hugs my PowerLock tightly as I'm uncertain of SOG's future*

Damn, I need to stock up on SOG knives now.  Gotta get my Vulcan soon!

This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

The world would truly be a sad place without SOG in it. They are in my opinion the only folks out there who are close to Leatherman in terms for Multitool manufacturing and really care about it. Before you Vic people jump on me, Vic is in a class by itself....the swiss have nothing on LM and SOG  ;) I may not carry my SOG's on a basis but if I need one I know I have one to back me up the whole way. Then again  What if Leatherman bought SOG?  :ahhh How about a LM Charge with compound leverage!  >:D Ok nevermind, scratch that hehe

I've got Leatherman, SOG, Bear, Sheffield, and some other cheapies in my collection, and after LM, the SOG Powerlock is my favorite.

I wish Leatherman would buy SOG in order to keep production in America like Vic did with Wenger in Switzerland.

Ok guys, all seems to be well! This is what I got back from Chris:

David

Yes, there is some buzz going around.  In short, we took some equity investors
to help us expand and grow the company going forward.  Spencer is still involved
and designing products for SOG. The only change is that now instead of him doing
everything he is focusing solely on design and engineering. We brought in some
new management people that can help us out.  Otherwise the company will be
the same as before. We can talk more at BLADE.

There's going to be several sighs of relief..I hope that investors won't take too big a hand in operations and have the bean counters running the show, and doing their best to squash R&D

Sounds reassuring, but I don't buy it.  I've been in manufacturing long enough to know that whenever a company needs to take on outside investors, it usually signals the beginning of the end.  Hopefully with Sog's reputation and loyal fanbase they'll stick around but as for the quality going forward it's anyones guess.  New management's primary objective is to cut production cost.  And whats the easiest solution to cutting production costs?.
Just my 2 cents.

Wow, exactly what I was thinking.  I personally know of two companies; one major and one pretty big but not huge, that went completely extinct under the same circumstances I'm reading that SOG is in now.  Financial backers came in, and over the course of maybe two years drain inventory out of the host company.  Legal loan sharking on a higher level.

Imagine the money and time spent on all those wacky knife designs...I would have spent it on a huge ad campaign for the Powerlock 2.0 instead.  A SOG TV commercial indirectly knocking Leatherman in a "friendly competitor" type way would have made some guys take notice out there in America :D  Ir even some magazine advertisements...does SOG even advertise period?

I wish SOG well and hate to be a naysayer and hope I'm totally wrong.  I love their tools and their history, but these are strange times everywhere and anything is possible.

Corrugated, are you referring to the Fusion line? Those were some out there designs.I saw them as an attempt to appeal to a broader market...the collectors, the gift givers, etc. I think everybody here can sit back and think of several grand old companies that were bled white by the vampires.
The times, they are strange all right, and I'm afraid, that before things level out,we're going to see a lot of strange combinations, and fallen flags in the dust.

Yes, those wacky knives in the fusion line...I'd like to see how many are still in boxes taking up space in the SOG warehouse...

I belive a company has to sometimes scale back production and literally take a step back and regroup in tough times and wait for the right time to slowly come back with a few new products.  I still think money on advertising for SOG would be money very well spent.  They have a great line of tools especially that Leatherman users around the world would like to take a closer look at.

I agree, advertising, and product placement, can make or break any company, and in economic conditions like we have now that's the time to advertise, even when you tighten the belt elsewhere.

If they're able and smart, they'd hang onto the Fusion knives for 3-5 years, sell them on the Ebay, for outrageous prices, and recoup their investment plus a tidy sum to boot. :D

I wouldn't even know where to find anything SOG in a retail store around here.
Fry's sells some Paladin tools, that's as close as we get.

Hardware stores sell some LM, Vic, and Gerber, no SOG anywhere.

I just hope the this company won't do to SOG what Fiskars did to Gerber :-\
