Air Force survival knife
on: June 02, 2009, 07:14:45 PM
I just ordered an Air Force survival knife from Amazon today.  There might be better but it just seems a classic icon with the saw back and hammer pommel.  It seems like such a general outdoor utility knife.

I got issued one of these. Not a bad knife if you keep it oiled up.

Who makes it?

I've got an Ontario Spec-Plus version and it's solid and relatively cheap.  It has a really nice sheath also despite the price. (I think I paid under $30 for it)

I had a Camillus that I loved but someone liberated from my car.  :(

The pommel makes a good hammer and the saw back sucks as far as cutting branches but it was designed to cut plexiglass.

There are holes in the guard so you can attach it to a branch and use it as a spear.

I really really like this knife even more then my Marine Recon Ka Bar.

I think this was the first knife called a "survival knife" and I suspect is still the best general purpose design.  The only improvement would be if they could come out with a version using 440C Stainless steel instead of 1095 carbon steel.

First looking at the picture, I thought it was a fillet knife.

A lot of plexiglass to cut when chrashed in the jungle? Why was that made like that?

I wanted a Camillus USAF survival knife for so long until my younger sister finally scored one for me. I absolutely LOVE it as my trail knife since it wears so comfortably. I'd like to find a fire starter to replace the sharpening stone. I've seen complaints that the edges are ground too thinly for a true survival knife, but it looks like it would skin beautifully (haven't brought myself to try it on fish yet), and aesthetically it really sends me. One note for those who want one but haven't seen them, the Camillus and Ontario handles are somewhat different from my limited observations. The Camillus has smooth leather while the local Ontarios I've seen have "hairy" leather.

The Ontario and Camillus AFSKs side by side...the Camillus has a slightly longer blade and more sweep to the clip.

The Spec-plus AFSK I have has a different blade than the original...the Spec-plus USN-2 looks to be a closer copy - LINK

Easy. Airplane cockpit windows are plexiglass. I a plane crashed, and the cockpit won´t open as intended, then use the knife to cut yourself out of the plane. Unlikely to happen, but that´s why it is designed to cut plexiglass.
