cleaning old knives
on: February 23, 2009, 04:59:29 PM
This knife I am going to be getting is going to need alot of cleaning.  What do you recommend to use liquid, some sort of scrubber that will put the shine back on it?  Thanks.

great thanks.   It's an Alox Swiss and going to need some work done to it.  The blade edges have been miss sharpened and it's very dirty but didn't pay much for it.

I use brasso too. It's also an excellent stropping fluid if you really want to pamper your blade.
I used to come here a lot.

I dont like WD-40 for cleaning. WD-40 traps dust which is not a good thing. I use "Break Free" which is the same stuff used for cleaning guns. I also use a toothbrush and soft cloth.  :tu:

Here is a Gerber I just finished:

For once something you can buy over here as well (twice the price but I'm used to that  ::) ).  I'll have to give it a try.  Normally I'm a washing liquid and warm water chap but for non-stainless stuff that I can't fully disassemble I do tend to use WD40.

Looks like its best to use gloves with it though  http://oeh.informaworld.com/soeh/content~content=a777254403~db=all~order=page

Update: Can't find it anywhere without rip-off P&P :(  Makes it nearly £15 for a 120ml bottle.

If you like to clean medal surfaces with soap and water not a problem even if you cant take the item apart. Blow dry after cleaning the saturate with WD40 (Water Displacement Formula 40) to displace any remaining water and wipe off excess. I have been shooting black powder rifles and revolvers for years. I clean them with soap and water dry well and oil well with WD40. No rust!

I use Sentry solutions products.. Their Tuf Glide is the best lubricant I've seen.. Their Tuf Cloths do wonders, I have never had a LM rust because of them!

For a daily lubricant WD-40 is pretty horrible like Gadget Guy stated, it's like a grit magnet. Having said that, it's not bad to use as a first cleaner to get out old oil, grease, grit, etc. But then use hot soapy water to clean out the WD-40. Then use whatever you want to give it a nice shine. Personally, I don't put much oil on my SAKS. Maybe a very, very miniscule amount of oil is all and I make sure I wipe off as much excess as I can.

I just use really hot water with a "grease fighting" dish soap.

I hate WD-40... :P

I use Mineral Spirits a.k.a Stoddard solvent for a lot of cleaning jobs. It doesn't seem to harm most plastics either...but I don't soak plastics in it.

I also use it a lot for cleaning adhesive residue from stickers and labels.

WD40 has been seeing less lubricating jobs around my house after getting LPS#2. For general cleaning I use soap and warm water. For the down and dirty cleaning Brasso and soap/water. For lubricating my knives that touch food I'll use mineral oil,  otherwise I like Eazox or Militec-1. Eazox is better at abating rust though.
