Maglite LED upgrade
on: June 11, 2009, 05:31:14 PM
Gadget Guy very kindly sent me an LED upgrade for my 4Dcell mag . Now while its not going to set anything on fire it is a huge improvement on the std bulb and is more then enough for my needs , it also I am told will greatly increase run time  :D

I havn't had the chance to do beam shots but I promise I will just as soon as I can .

In the mean time I thought you would like to see just how easy it is to transform your old Mag into something very usefull .

The little LED unit , thats it  :D it really is easy to do .

Unscrew the Mags head

Unscrew the collar and remove the bulb

LED and bulb together with the retaining collar at the top

Close up of LED

With collar on

Screw into place

All done , just need to screw the head back on and thats it  :tu:

I'm very pleased with it and I'm going to keep an eye on run time and see if its an improvement .

Thanks Gadget guy for making this possible   :salute:

Cheers

Dunc

I've got the same drop-in for my 2D and like it a lot.  It doesn't see that much use these days but it used to be my work torch and got used almost every day.  The batteries will last forever, in fact I'm not sure that the set I have in mine have ever been changed.

Thanks for the pictures mate :tu:

I want to upgrade my 5d mag, but I don't think I'd use it very much.

Looking forward to the beamshots.

I fitted my 6D Maglite with a LED as well. This light sees a a fair bit of use,  it's so large it is always easy to find. With the LED, the light is just a bright if not brighter and has a very long run time.
I makes a fairly good club as well :viking:

Not being a torch person particularly what is it you recommend?  Explain it as if you are speaking to a child that has almost no grasp of electronics at all.  :tu:

That way Dunc might be able to get it too.  ;)

Im with you on that.  I have a two D light that is completely worthless with the standard bulb does that led (made for 4 cells) really work?  I would like to get one for the 2 D but only if there is a noticeable difference.

I have the 2D insert and it works well, but isn't much brighter than the standard bulb. I use them becuase of the longer run times.  :tu:

What you do is replace the Luxeon LED with a SSC P4 LED, which is twice are efficient. You start by pull out the Luxeon (test and mark polarity well before). Then pull out the plastic end piece to drop out the board. You'll see on the board two springs the leg on Luxeon fits into. Solder two short copper wires so the end stick outside the can when you put board back in. Stick SSC P4 on the can with thermal compound, solder the wires to the two legs and you are done.

It's the first time I've ever used a solder iron and it worked well. Just remember the board polarity throughout and match it with new LED, or you'll fry the board. You can get both LED and thermal compound from dealextreme.
