The Farmer is "best in show".

1. Compact enough in size for EDC, while the OHT is just too bulky in the pocket.
2. Comfortable in the hand, which I do not find in the OHT
3. Wonderfully robust main blade spring, which the OHT does not have
4. Far better awl than the OHT
5. Awesome aesthetics that the OHT will never have
6. Perfect blade size, while the blade on OHT is a bit too big.
7. Blade can be closed with just my right hand, which I cannot do with the OHT.

Sorry, but the OHT is smack dab at the bottom of my SAK list.

This ^^^^^ with the added comment that, the farmer is alox. That in itself puts it above the OHT. Alox is the best SAK's.  :tu:
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

What's with all the gushing over alox all the time? I have an alox SAK (Pioneer Harvester) and quite frankly I don't see what all the excitement is about. Sure it's shiny, but that's about it. I prefer celidor.

Handy as hell....

Stuck cigars in the mailbox....

With the ALOX scales and brass/nickel silver liners, they are impervious to weather...

They carry easy....

Easy edge touch ups....

And when the work is done.....

Besides they look just marvelous!

Love that ALOX!!!!!

All that can be said for celidor as well. :-)

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against alox, it's super shiny and hardy. I just love celidor slightly more. :-)

One HUGE advantage to alox in my opinion is the ease of cleaning and drying without getting water trapped behind the scales.

All except the weather "proof-ness". The celidor SAKs need a little more care and oil to avoid corrosion in the aluminum liners. I have celidors that are completely welded shut because they were stored damp/wet and dirty by their previous owners.  It's uncommon, but it does happen. Most can be restored but some require disassembly to free the blades. I absolutely love celidors as well and wouldn't take for them but an ALOX will run wet, dry or dirty and keep on running with very little care. When they are abused, they can be brought back to working shape nearly every time.

This Pioneer sat in water long enough for the stainless keyring to darken with rust and after sitting in an oil bath for a month, it's as strong and snappy as the day it left the factory.

Google Swiss army knife frozen shut for details.

Are the liners in celidor made from a different, less corrosion resistant, metal than those in alox? If that's so, I did not know it. Alright, alright. I'll yield that if one wants a truly indestructible SAK, alox is the way to go. Still love my celidor though. Plenty sturdy for me. :-)

Also makes a better improvised hammer too :D

A few months back I noticed a nail sticking out where the school kids had been pulling on the fence. If I left it a kid would have been injured (I work in a school) so I just laid my Farmer, scale first on the head of the nail and pounded on the other scale with the heel of my hand until it was driven home :)

I love my Swisschamps, but I wouldn't of been able to use that for that job :)

For me it boils down to the following:

- Which one does fit your hands better (hand-size)
- Are you comfortable with the OHT in your pocket
- Great awl and OK improvised Phillips or OK Phillips* and not so good awl
- Scale tools

For me:
- Both fit my hand well
- OHT is to big for pocket carry
- I don't like back tools and prefer the improvised Phillips from the can opener over the back-layer Phillips. I use the awl quite a lot.
- I use the toothpick a lot but find the tweezers useless (Only point where there is a slight advantage for the OHT for me).
So for me, the Farmer is the clear winner (actually, its the Pioneer as I don't use a wood-saw in my daily life). Adding to this I prefer the style / looks and feel of the 93mm alox over the 111mm. In the end, everybody has to decide whats best for them. I think the Farmer has such a huge group of fans because in addition to being a great tool its also extremely pocket friendly.

* I don't think back tools are good, they easily close on you and are awkward to use. So, while the Phillips is shaped great, its position only gives it a rating of OK, the awl is not so good to begin with, combined with its position I would rate it as not so good.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

I don't hate alox. I just think they are over hyped, have a very limited tool set, and don't have a nice feel to them  :D that said, I'd rather carry alox than a 111mm though

It is because it adds a saw to the classic Soldier/Pioneer.   In addition to that, Alox handle scales are indestructible (plastic breaks easily and is sensitive to some common chemicals) and the tools are a little bit thicker, making them more durable.

My great-grandfather bought a red Alox Pioneer which he bought shortly before he passed away in 1993.   I carried it when I was younger, but I decided for one, the knife was my great-grandfathers, and was even though it was only about 22 years old, it was worth $100 or so, so I decided it wasn't worth losing.   On Amazon, it and the Pioneer were about the same, so I have decided to get a Farmer.    However, I think colored Alox is cooler, despite being more expensive.

And at $30 it's a steal!

Celidor is sturdy and super versatile but there is a difference in the liners. Take care of it and it will last a lifetime!! :2tu:

From Syph007
"I don't know about over all the years, but currently alox liners are nickel silver (german silver) and 91mm liners are cheap aluminum.  It feels like 2000 or 3000 series to me as its very soft.  For sure not a higher grade like 6061."

I tend to agree. All but the alox over 111mm. I really like the 111s. Alox sure is pretty, but I like the 91s better. And I like the 91s even more so when they had the thicker tangs and blades.

I bought a used farmer that some dippy had improperly sharpened.  I used it some then traded it away.

Now I want another. I want a 4 line tang older model.  I will be on the lookout

I got my silver Harvester on eBay just a couple of weeks ago for about $30 new in box. I don't think that's any more expensive than the going rate for farmers.
