Verge of buying Spirit--butter knife or not?
on: June 20, 2009, 06:25:16 PM
I'm almost going to order a Spirit from Tim, was set on the Spirit X originally, but thought about it, and the butter knife may seem more sheeple friendly.

But aside from that factor, are there other good reasons why the non-pointy blade on the Spirit would be better than the spear point on the X? I'm concerned that it would be hard to sharpen because of the serrations. Also, I use the blade on my MTs to open packages, letters, cut string etc a lot, in essence, light duties where sharpness helps a lot. Will the serrations near the tip affect these tasks? I imagine cutting a letter open would result in snags, wouldn't it?

Any comments would be appreciated. And no, I'm not buying both.

I've never had any trouble with the Spirit's butterblade.  Cuts very well, very sharp, does the jobs I've used it for - opening packages, cutting string/cotton etc.  The lack of a point can be a bit annoying at times but its never stopped me from cutting with it.

If you can do without scissors you could get the Spirit S that has butterknife and spearpoint blades.  Or you could back up a butterblade Spirit with a Spartan etc if you wanted.

Well I turned my butter knife into a sheepsfoot, so I'm probably not the best person to ask, but as far as serrations go, there easy to sharpen (especially if you've got a sharpmaker) and if you find yourself cutting mainly fibrous matterials then it could be the way to go :)

Personally I'd go or the X still :)

Me , I am an XMan :D :D :D

I love my X , never used the peanut butter knife so I can not comment. I do not think the X's blade would be scary too the average Joe  it aint that big , be nice if it was a bit bigger  :D :D

I have all four Spirit versions and, call me weird, in retrospect I believe a PE butter knife (i.e. Mike's sheepsfoot) would be the best of both worlds.

I would definitely prefer a plain edge for the tasks you describe.

You might consider pairing the Spirit with a Soldier or Cadet. Then you would have both edges available.

Another option might be to file off the serrations on the Spirit butter knife. Then you would have a sheeple-friendly knife with a plain edge. I think there is a walkthrough somewhere from someone else who has done it. It looked fairly easy to do.

I think the "S" with both blades is the one for you . And pair it with a Micra or Classic .

Go for the peanut butter blade. The longer I have mine the more I like it. The only thing the spearpoint can do that the PB blade can't is poke things, but it doesn't do poking as well as the awl does.

Thanks for all the comments. I do already carry a Micra, but the S is out for me because I like the option of having scissors with me when my keychain is in my bag.
