I'm glad I'm bumped this old thread.

The only thing I miss about edcf is the gang there. The forum itself they can keep.

MTO is giving me brain overload;)

In a good way

The issue with politics is that there's really nothing constructive that can be accomplished discussing it, and a whole lot of destructive things.  In fact, over the years we've never had a political thread that didn't cause major dissent among members, and even fewer that actually accomplished anything.  There are lots of political forums out there and they don't accomplish anything either, but at least members there know what they are getting into when they join.

Also, I don't think you were ever anywhere near as close to being banned as you may think you were.  In fact, I don't recall the Mods ever discussing the possibility of banning you, and those old biddies yack about everything behind the scenes....

Def
I understand the need for this, and mostly because when it comes to my political views, I'm kind of a loudmouth.

When I have posted comments that have touched on or are related to politics, I've always made sure to state when what I'm saying is my opinion, or is based on empirically verified scientific fact.  Being a psychologist, albeit not a social psychologist, and having an advanced degree, I'm very much of the opinion that political policy should be made based on objective fact, not ideology.  Of course, we all know how well that works...     But, that's the beauty of my political viewpoints; most of what I believe is based on scientific results, if they're not replicated then I'm probably wrong, if they are, I'm probably right.  But, that's not how people think, in general, let alone in terms of politics.  Having an in-depth scientific literacy gives me a perspective that most other people don't, and like any regular human being, my viewpoints are strongly affected by my experiences and education.  Unfortunately, there's a very strong anti-education and anti-intellectual sympathy in the U.S. now, so people like me are generally looked down upon than anything else.

Yeah there's a lot of croc going on there, especially the part on how the owner keeping the forum online no matter what even though it's supposedly detrimental to his own livelihood. Anyone with half a brain should see through it but the royal mod legion there does a good job of keeping people fooled.

No BS on this forum, one of the main reasons I'm here.

I have never been banned on a message board. Got banned from a newspaper site for getting into a flame war.

On Survival Boards I got warned (downgraded from infraction) for mentioning abortion.

I thanked the mod for being attentive and apologized.

I avoid going too far. My belief that people post and people can get dinged.

I was banned from Cold Steel's forum for attacking (more like asking for evidence) a poster who had faked military credentials. That just angers me to no end. The ban was lifted.

I was almost banned from KnifeForums because somebody stole my reviews, posted them as his own, and the moderators wanted an explanation. I almost missed the "deadline" for banning, but I was out of town and made it back in time to send a PM.

A certain tactical forum banned me for mentioning that I was an atheist, after a poster asked me directly to pray with him.

A bushcraft forum banned me because I wanted evidence (there I go again) that batoning a certain way would break the knife.

This is gonna hurt...

Never been banned (so far) but have gone close a couple of times, generally for expressing my thoughts on inappropriate behaviour by power-crazy mods (I think the forum initials might be C P something ?).

These days I try to be polite when disagreeing with someone else, and remind them that it is OK for us to have different OPINIONS (funny how some people have a very strongly held belief that they know "facts", while others only have "opinions").

Funniest thing I ever saw was a mod on the Brick Yard forum who actually managed to ban himself    (and what was even more amusing is that particular forum is very tolerant and hardly ever censors posts, let alone bans anyone).

The beliefs held by a lot of people often render them unable to consider the point of view of someone else.

That is their loss, and no amount of pointing out another option will help them change their thinking.

The problem with fact vs opinion is pretty related to correlation vs causation. I may use a fact to reinforce my opinion, but that doesn't automatically make my argument valid. Scientifically minded people arguing in fields where they have no real depth of knowledge are especially prone to this, they know just enough to be dangerous, but not enough to be wise.

Now I just can't be bothered! They are mostly just looking for attention, trying to get a rise out of you.
