The issue with politics is that there's really nothing constructive that can be accomplished discussing it, and a whole lot of destructive things. In fact, over the years we've never had a political thread that didn't cause major dissent among members, and even fewer that actually accomplished anything. There are lots of political forums out there and they don't accomplish anything either, but at least members there know what they are getting into when they join. Also, I don't think you were ever anywhere near as close to being banned as you may think you were. In fact, I don't recall the Mods ever discussing the possibility of banning you, and those old biddies yack about everything behind the scenes.... Def
I don't care if you're smart or not Heinz, I still like you!
I'm glad I'm bumped this old thread. The only thing I miss about edcf is the gang there. The forum itself they can keep.MTO is giving me brain overload;) In a good way

These days I try to be polite when disagreeing with someone else, and remind them that it is OK for us to have different OPINIONS (funny how some people have a very strongly held belief that they know "facts", while others only have "opinions").
The beliefs held by a lot of people often render them unable to consider the point of view of someone else. That is their loss, and no amount of pointing out another option will help them change their thinking.
http://xkcd.com/386/The problem with fact vs opinion is pretty related to correlation vs causation. I may use a fact to reinforce my opinion, but that doesn't automatically make my argument valid. Scientifically minded people arguing in fields where they have no real depth of knowledge are especially prone to this, they know just enough to be dangerous, but not enough to be wise.
