Colibri lighters. Opinions?
on: June 22, 2009, 06:09:11 PM
I have a "windproof" now discontinued Colibri butane lighter.  It's not my favorite, and I've spent a fair amount of time to get the thing to work reliably. Is this typical of their lighters?  Now, a week after picking up another butane lighter from ebay, I've finally got this thing to work well.

Any others with one of these butane lighters by Colibri?

I've got a Collibri butane lighter.  Its a nice gunmetal thing, looks pretty cool.

I've never had any problems getting it to work - has always produced a nice even and reliable flame.  I've not used it outdoors all that much (I've got a windmill lighter I use for camping trips etc) so its not been thoroughly tested.  Its worked everytime I've asked it to so far though, and the wind has never been able to blow it out.

What make have you got mate?

Riptide wind resistant.  Got it at REI (outdoors store here in the States)

This is mine.

It's working now, but seems to have fuel feeding fussiness.

I heard great things about them, and I wanted a jet flame.  It worked well for about two weeks then suddenly died.  I was unimpressed and likely wouldn't buy another.  I think I'll stick to my Zippo.

Colibri lighters are fantastic.  I have a few for cigar smoking and I love them.   Prometheus is another good company but I prefer Colibri more.  Colibri lighters are well-built, affordable and excellent in performance.  For a torch lighter, go with either Colibri, Prometheus or Blazer.

Ditto.  I can troubleshoot and fix a Zippo that isn't working :D

And Colibri went teets up a few months ago, I don't know if the name "Colibri" was sold and the designs are being made by someone else...but it was a big story here..everyone showed up to work at the Colibri plant and the doors were locked!

I didn't know that, its a pity - better hope my lighter doesn't break down :)

I've been quite impressed with my Colibri; its always worked well for me, I've had it about six months maybe.  Its not too fuel hungery for a jet lighter either and it stands up to pretty strong gusts of wind.  Not got a Zippo (much to my shame :-[) mainly cus I know once I get one I'll start collecting them :)

My Colibri worked fine until it got the some off. Then it wouldn't light consistently. The piezo electric worked, but it was like it was out of fuel. Multiple emptyings and refillings, blowing it out with compressed air and finally nonflammable brake cleaner finally got it running.  Lights on second try always.

As is par for all butane lighters, it won't work well (if at all) at elevation. But it's good for ice climbing to local places. I carry a Bic backup, though.
