Where do I go from here? Need advice.
on: June 24, 2009, 01:00:39 PM
As most of you know, I just started collecting SAKS in the last few weeks.

So far, this is what I currently have:

1. Vic WorkChamp XL
2. Vic Jumpmaster
3. Vic Rescue tool
4. Vic 09' Soldier
5. Vic Sapphire SwissChamp
6. Vic Cybertool 125 Jubilee
7. Vic Ranger
8. Vic Huntsman
9. Vic ALOX Farmer
10. Vic Sport
11. Vic ALOX 08’ Soldier
12. Vic Silvertech Spartan
13. Vic Scout
14. Vic Classic SD
15. Wenger Handyman
16. Wenger SS Traveler
17. Wenger Black Traveler
18. Wenger Red Traveler
19. Wenger Highlander
20. Wenger Black Viking
21. Wenger EVO 10
22. Wenger EVO Swiss Clipper
23. Wenger Black Esquire
24. Wenger Red Esquire

I am currently eyeing the Wenger Ranger line. I did place a bid and lost on a Wenger Minathor. That looked odd enough that I liked it. Any tips, suggestions, etc. I guess i could always keep my eyes out for older SAKS.

There are a few that I'd say are "must haves" from Vic: a Cadet (lots of colours to get as well), Compact, Climber and Camper.  I suppose it depends on whether you plan on using them or are going to be simply part of a collection.

PS are you sure #10 is a Sportsman?  The Sportsman is a 84mm SAK (one of my favourites as well) but that looks like a 91mm something.  Could just be the picture though.

You are probably right.

I checked the packaging. Luckily, I still have the name card. They call it a Sport. Fixed it.

It looks like a sportsman when I compare it to the one off of SakWikki.

Ha, I think I know the issue.  Canada is one of the Counties that re-names anything that has the Nylon scales, so I have no idea what a Sport is in the rest of the world.  I suspect that that is true of the Scout as well.

I think I ran into this issue once before on here with my first 4 Vics bought at the local Canadian Tire.

Here are some quick pictures of them.

This one says "Sport" on the packaging.

This one says "Scout" on the packaging.

They look like a Camper and Spartan respectively.
Great collection. Makes mine look positively tiny. Though soon to include a Spirit. Woohoo! :multi:

How did you make the pic?

I have close to 30 myself.....that is cool the pic that is!!!

Suggestions:

Swiss Tools
Champion (pre-1987 style)
OHT, maybe
GAK, maybe  Check with Felinevet to see if he has any more OD Green Troopers available.  Last I checked, he did.
Craftsman, pre 1987 (no pliers but has fish scaler). Felinevet has that one, too.  I have one...RARE

See if you can get a SwissFlame...I got one of those, too.  RARE and not sold in USA but maybe you can find one in Canada.

I can get you a Grand Prix here in Korea (think Mountaineer, but phillips in lieu of corkscrew).  Dude in Seoul has TONS of those.

Send me your needs, and me and Felinevet will take care of the rest!!!

Some 108mm would be good, especially as there larger, yet thinner :)

Like Gareth said, a Alox Cadet would be good :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

The Sterling Silver Tiffany SAK's are a bit swish. But a little too pricey for me. I showed this one to Neil , brought the poor guy too tears  :P :D. It is the first big Tiffany I have seen    they are quite rare/EXPENSIVE, apparently.

How I made the photograph.

I have a cat tree house just the right size for small object photography...goes about waist high. I place a piece of black velvet on that. Place your objects on top of the cloth. Grab your camera. I oddly enough, use my Canon S5 IS for this because it has an external flash shoe, and the real trick..a swivel back LCD. Attach a flash gun to flash shoe mount. Swivel the flash so that it bounces off the ceiling, set the camera on Program. Take photos and import them onto computer. Do any slight corrections required in Photoshop. Resize them and post to Photobucket, then post on here....whew.

As you figured out, I used Photoshop to do the numbering via a text layer, being sure to use a contrasting text colour.

It is actually simple. I get a kick that I am using my cheapest camera in the house to do these. Maybe this summer when I have some time, I may take a few with one of my DSLRs and  a fisheye. Now that would be interesting.  :D

Thanks for the advice folks.

I must concur with those that have suggested Cadets or Compacts; you could also go the route of collecting any of the many varieties of "Golfer" models, or Yeomans and Scientists. :)  Also, at least one Alox Classic, not to mention any of the scale variations of Classics, too.

You need a timekeeper, and I agree on the cadet.

I just picked up my 2 limited run 08' Soldiers. That is the last of the SAKS I have on order. Still have a lot of MTs on their merry way though.

Decided to take a family shot, 3 08' soldiers and a farmer. Hmm...sounds like a movie title?

Mmm. How about a Voyager? I understand that Karl Elsener is never without his. Mine is definitely a keeper. Or perhaps a Voyager Lite... or Expedition...

Karl Elsener was carrying a Traveller Lite last I heard.   Adds light, phillips, altimeter (handy in a mountainous place like Switzerland) temperature and display backlight.

The Expedition Lite adds the saw and file and some backspring tools, and is usually sold with an SOS-kit-like pouch sold as the "Expedition Kit", but should not be confused with earlier versions of the "Expedition Kit" that come with a different SAK.

For what the Expedition Kit costs, you could get an Alinghi and have enough  money left over to buy another SAK.

champ, mini champ....... definately some cadets ( 2 blades look harder to come by though i have seen them), and a couple of good 74 SAK examples should square you up.
curious.... of all those wenger and SAKs you have which do you prefer the most? i tend to collect the types i like the most. if you are collecting SAK examples of type then you need them all. if so you're going to be busy since you also have to take more pics to post here.
