Swiss Champ Question
on: June 25, 2009, 04:52:25 AM
Does the Swiss Champ have a new magnifying glass?
I’ve been looking on Amazon at the Victorinox  Swiiss Champ, and It looks like a metal casing on the magnifying glass.

The Victorinox site has a Champ picture with the plastic magnifying glass casing.

Very likely to be the new, clear, one piece plastic magnifier you'll get these days.  Even the older magnifier was a gray plastic frame with a glass lens.  You'll see a lots of the pics on websites showing to older style but that is more than likely just because they haven't updated the image.

Both the old and new magnifiers have their own advantages:
Old style:
x8 magnification
glass is less likely to scratch

New style:
x5 magnification
wider, flatter lens gives better field of vision.

IMO the newer style is better in real use terms but others would disagree.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

And one of those "others" would be me.  :D

I personally much prefer the older styled mag as it just feels more solid and looks better.  The newer one to me looks flimsy and cheap.  I also am quite happy with the magnification on the older one.

I'm with Gareth. Day to day the new magnifier is much easier to use than the old one.  That said on occasion the higher magnification of the old one is handy.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

If you use the zoom on this pic you can see why I think it's metal. No see through plastic here.  :-\

No see through plastic here.

That's because the plastic is frosted on the sides.
