Show us your Hobo knives.
on: June 30, 2009, 12:40:05 AM
My very first knife that my father gave me when I was a wee little lad was a hobo camping knife. Man oh man was I ever proud of that. I was in grade 3 at the time, and was happy that my father trusted me enough with a sharp blade. Well roll forward the years, and I still have that hobo knife, a little worse for wear, but it is still very functional.

Lately, I have been stumbling upon a few examples. I now have a grand total of 3, and I guess I will keep buying them whenever I see them up for sale locally. I have always found this type of knife rather interesting.

From left to right: My old STAG Ireland hobo knife. Dollarama $2 knife, Bushline Outdoors Campers Knife.

Two models even split up. Very handy that.

Let us see your examples. I am sure a few of you have nicer examples then my cheap ones. ;D

I have a Stag Ireland as well, must be about 23-25 years old now, like yours it saw quite a bit of service when I was a kid.  Mine has red scales however and I think the can opener looks slightly different.  I'll take some pics in the morning.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Three "Imperial Ireland" with smooth black, brown and red plastic scales. What looks like an Imperial on the top left is a pretty exact copy made in China with "Pocket Pal" stamped on the tang.

Bottom left is a Colonial. I've seen quite a few of these as souvenir knives with specially marked scales for theme parks and tourist attractions.

Two Japanese made take-aparts. They are identical except that one tells you it is sharp  ::) and has a lanyard ring.

The bottom is a large Chinese made take-apart.

The Chinese take-apart is actually fairly well made and has normal size utensils...the fork even has four tines. I think I bought it at least 15 years ago.

I think this is a Hobo knife...I actually found this at the bottom of a very old trunk in my aunt's basement.  She doesn't know when it was purchased or where, but I thought it was cool.  It needs a lot more cleaning and as soon as I get some new attachments for my Dremel I'll keep at it.  It looks way way better than when I found it.  It was almost all rust, but it's coming along.  Doubt I'll ever use it, but I love working on it.  The only identification I can find is on the big knife blade and all it says is Japan.  If anyone has any other info, let me know. :)

And since we're kind of on the subject...does anyone know what kind of dremel tool attachments I can use to help me clean this?  I've started really polishing some of the blades (after I posted the pic) and it works nice, but there are some nooks and crannies I can't get into.  Any ideas?  thanks again.

PS I wasn't sure where to post a maintenance type question so I posted here...hope that's ok.

try the metal brush with LOTS of polish (and safety goggles), then the cottonball. Prepare to spoil the cottonball.
