Two nice Streamlights

Yesterday, the mail guy delivered a Streamlight Sidewinder.  Thought I'd show you some pics of the light and its cousin the Streamlight Syclone.  The Sidewinder is the smaller light on the right:

The Sidewinder clip.  The black wheel on the bottom in the first pic opens the batter compartment.  The cover is tethered to the ligt with a little steel cable.





The black circle is the Sidewinder's on/off button:



If you pull the button away from the body and turn it, you can activate the white, blue, green, or red led.

Each of the four leds has four brightness settings.  The UI is very intuitive.  To change the brightness setting, just press and hold the button and the light will cycle through the four settings.

It is also possible to enable a strobe setting with each of the four leds.

I like HA III as much as the next guy, but this little light is very stout, as is the Syclone.

I'm not an expert but I'd say no.  I've read on the CPF, others criticize the Sidewinders output.  I knew this before purchasing the light.  I liked the design and the flexibility the Sidewinder offered.  It's certainly bright enough to light up a room or long dark hallway, but I don't think it will meet the needs of someone looking for a powerful light.  I think the lumen output is 20 or so on my model.  However, Brightguy.com has a model featuring a 50 lumen white led.  With the 50 lumen model though, one gets the IR led instead of the green led.  I have no need for IR.

Designs are unique. Looks like those lights are run by 2 AA's. How about the runtime, Bill?

The sidewider uses 2 AA batteries, not sure about the other one.

Spoonrobot did a fantastic review of the sidewinder on here so anyone keen on it should check that out as well. 

I had a Sidewinder and really liked it, but it's full beam let it down IMO so it's living with a copper now.

I did check them out a while back, though never bought one.  The multiple outputs and ability to angle the head would make it really flexible, but the main output put me off.

I'm afraid I don't know about runtimes.  I've had the Syclone several years and have only replaced the batteries once.  The Sidewinder is still new and, truth be told, I just replace the batteries when the light dims.  I've never measured runtimes.

rp, the design is flexible.  I've been using the Sidewinder as a reading light while in bed (pretty tactical huh?)  It is the answer to be prayers in that regard.

I imagine its very good for 'tactical' bedtime reading   I use my Zebralight H30 in much the same way on low output and it works very well.  Glad you like your sidewinder mate
