These seem to command top dollar on ebay, are they worth it?

Depends.

Case makes good knives, and they are the number #1 collected knife. But as to cost it all depends on what Case knives you are looking at.

Different era's and different runs can greatly determine the collector value of any given Case piece, which in turn greatly affects it's monetary value. You can't go wrong with a Case, but never pay more than you have too.

I see two "classes" of Case knives.  One is the collectable, expensive, exotic handle material, engraved etc Case knife.  The other is the user Case knife.  It looks plain, isn't numbered or a limited edition, has a dull yellow handle, but still is sharp as hell and easy to handle.

I'm not a Case guru, but from researching them that's what I've found.  The "basic" Case knives I own are solid and I didn't pay more than $20-$25 for each one (a Trapper and Stockman).

Exactly, their are the collector knives as the working knives.

If I buy a Case it's got to either have the yellow Delrin handles or the standard brown plastic. These knives, I think, are worth it.

But I will say I broke down and got a Stockman with orange G-10 cause it was just too cool looking. But no more of that.

Case makes a good knife but i don't see paying over 40 bucks for one. Mine is a user and it's a fine quality stockman.

Pacu,

One day I almost broke down and got me the Case Select #94 Gunboat Canoe with the Mammoth Ivory scales........almost! And while I don't mind paying for quality I just could not fork out the $295.00 price in the end!  :o

They sure are purdy though........

Pacu,

Most Case stuff only goes up in value, particularly if they are shorter run items left unused and kept with all it's original packaging. I don't really collect for that though. I just enjoy knives and acquire because it's fun.

yud,

Case knives aren't expensive unless you get into their shorter run, or limited offerings. Regular run items are some of the least expensive American made slipjoints out there. You can get bone handled Canoes, Trappers, Stockmans, and numerous other patterns from them for under $50.00 a piece if you know where to look.

They can get pricey, don't get me wrong.......even some patterns can bring a premium. But most of their offerings are relatively inexpensive. When you get into regular run stuff from the likes of Schatt & Morgan, Robeson, Great Eastern Cutlery, Colonel Coon, and the like is where slipjoints can get a bit costly.

Tap I get it and I know logically they are worth it, but when I compare them to what I know (SAKs) they seem like a lot.  One day I will likely come around and start buying them.  But that day will likely wait till I am done with my Vic wants, or after college ;)

yud,

Well.....yeah, compared to most SAK's the Case stuff is quite pricey. Most Traditional Slips for that matter are. But there's not much like the feel of a classic made of bone or horn and steel in the hand..........

AHB,

Forgot to mention, I just used this pic of mine as a reference. That's actually not a Case in my hand but a #23 from Great Eastern Cutlery. Case makes excellent knives, and most that comes from Queen Cutlery is top notch.......but you'd be hard pressed to find much better in American Made slipjoints than what GEC is making right now.

Wow wow wow, those GEC slippies are beautiful.

All of them are out of my price range though, I play with Marble's, Rough Rider, and Frost Cutlery knives. Made in China, of course, but way decent quality for what little money they cost you. :D

One Lame Frog,

I'm a fan of the Rough Rider's, some of the best quality coming from China at the moment. I've got a slew of them, they are the best bang going in inexpensive slipjoints. The imported Marble's line of slips are good as well and they are made by the same people over in China that do the RR's.

But.......everyone should have at least one GEC. The quality is just so damn good. They are about as close to custom quality as you can get without the custom price.
