How many variations exist of this multi-tool?
on: July 05, 2009, 01:30:40 AM
I saw a Lansky multi-tool at one of the local stores and recognized it immediately from another multi-tool that I already had. However, I was curious to find out what was different so I bought it, and true enough there were a few differences.

As you can see, they are both exactly the same tool wise other then the Phillips screwdriver on one was exchanged for a screwdriver bit adapter.

Yes, the handles are exactly the same in shape and construction with a slight difference. For some reason, the Lansky seems to have a few extra decorative rivets on the handle. Likewise, the screws are different.

Another difference, the Lansky has the metal on the handles knurled to give you a better grip. There are a few other slight differences. Some of the folding tools on the Lansky seem to be slightly better in quality. Likewise, the plastic end caps on the handles do not rattle on the Lansky.

Yep.

I looked up M-Tech and came up with this one rather quickly.

Looks like the first in my photo, only with a flashlight added.

Canadian Tire has something similar to these.  I believe it's made by Carolina Knife & Tool.

That is correct. It is the first one shown in the photograph with the cut out handles.

It's a popular design.  I was just browsing Canadian Tire's website and they have four different branded multitools that have this exact design; Gerber, Winchester, Carolina and a generic no-namer.

These are a generic multitool made in China and sold by the billions to various companies.  Some companies like Gerber and Lansky opt for the "fancier" versions of them for branding purposes, while others like Carolina Knife and Tool are all about the bottom line- bring in the tool and move it out just as fast, cheaper and faster than the competition.

I would think that you could spend the rest of your life searching out variations of this tool, and still never get to the end of it.  I'd wager that just about every importer in every country, every outdoor/sporting/hardware chain has their own version of it, several manufacturers....  and if you are willing to purchase a run of ten thousand, you can get whatever variation you want as well!

Bahco "Multitool"... :P

I hear you ...  Looks a lot like the "eVolv" series of stuff that Sears is trying to push in "green" recyclable cardboard packaging etc.

However, Bahco is a VERY reputable company, and makes some awesome tools.  I think they were bought out by Stanley recently.  In any case, I don't know what Chineezy stuff they might be rebranding nowadays, but there are a lot of tools out there (some of which I own) that are top quality.  Facom is another similar brand . . .  their only real caveat is that they're French  :P

All my wrenches ect. is Bahco and it's some of the best tools around... :tu:
But this "multitool" I really dislike... :P Why not use the Bahco brand with some real quality MT's...?

Well I wasn't looking for another one, but I helped a friend today install some windows. He ran out of mason bits, and we took a drive to Home Depot. Guess what I saw as we searched for drill bits. This one is a Sheffield.

Rather interesting example. Completely different in how it opens and the variety of tools.

From left to right: Lansky, Carolina Tool & Knife, Sheffield.

Talk about anything the customer wants, they can make it. Wow.

I think I've seen this model at Wal-Mart, for $10, on the camping aisle.

If nothing else, ya gotta hand it to them for coming up with a platform that lends itself to being produced in so many variations. (that only happens by design, never by accident) :tu:
