Schrade St1 Made in USA vs New model
on: July 10, 2009, 05:18:37 AM
Is there a way to tell the old made in usa schrade ST1 from the new taylor ones? in terms of say model number or packaging? I'm thinking of bidding on one but want to be sure i'm not gong to get a junky version.
Any other thoughts on this?

Just remember that this is relative. It will look OK compared to the Chinese made tool, compared to a LM or Vic it'll still look pretty funky.  :D But they're big interesting tools, I had one for a while.

You know, I was thinking of getting one of the cheaper Chinese ones. I bet it probably isn't all that bad for the price. The older USA version is a quality tool, albeit a funky design...but that is part of its charm.

I drive by the old Imperial Schrade factory on the way to my hunting cabin. What a shame.

Best to steer clear of the Chinese Taylor-Schrades toothrot. :-\

As far as identification goes, the easiest visual cue is the plier pivot. The made-in-USA Schrades have a large heavy duty rivet, whereas the Taylor-Schrades are completely flush on both sides.

Big pivot rivet on USA tools:

Flush pivot area with no rivet on Chinese tools:

If you're really interested in the variations of the Schrade ST1, there's more info about it in the Encyclopedia: https://wiki.multitool.org/tiki-index.php?page=ST1+Tough+Tool  :)

Let's also not forget the infamous photo of the blade on the new one not actually fitting into the handle.   ::)

Funny thing is, in this case I think the shoddy quality has as much to do with the USA element (Taylor Brands) than it has with being manufactured in China. :P
